A loud explosion threw workers in disarray thinking that they had been hit by a bomb.<\/p>\n<p>Metropolitan Police spokesman, Mr Ibin Ssenkumbi said they were called in at the factory to rescue the people who were injured and extinguish fire at night.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were able to take the six people to hospital and they are still undergoing treatment of burns,&#8221; Mr Ssenkumbi said.<\/p>\n<p>The injured are Mr Ramathan Golooba, Mr Samuel Wetale, Mr Julius Sande, Mr Muhinda Ssempungu, Mr Joshua Ngobi and Mr Charles Bazanye<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ssenkumbi said they experts have found out that the blast wasn&#8217;t caused by a bomb as some callers informed them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our experts found out that the blast was caused by the bursting of a pipe that had outlet thus splashing hot metals on the workers,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Stuart Mwesigwa, the Business Development Manager of Roofings, in an interview with Daily Monitor confirmed the injury of their workers and that one of their two furnaces was destroyed by the blast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The alarm went off when the incident happened but those who were upstairs couldn&#8217;t come down first. But the situation is now under control. Our workers are still in hospital and are likely to be discharged today,&#8221; Mr Mwesigwa said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether the company would compensate the injured workers, he said they were insured.<\/p>\n<p>Blasts and fire incidents are on the increase in factories, according to police.<\/p>\n<p>Last month alone police responded to 38 fires higher than the average 28. Police have also seen an increase in losses due to fires in the education business.<\/p>\n<p>Since the year started there have been 17 fires in schools which have destroyed property worth millions of shillings.<\/p>\n<p>Police said the fires in the educations industry are due to negligence and poor electric installation.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, a total of 669 incidents of fires were reported, compared to 1,853 reported in 2009.
