New Manchester United<\/a> signing David De Gea<\/a> has set his sights high at his new club, aiming to emulate the success of his predecessor Edwin van der Sar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 20-year-old shot-stopper completed his move to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid on Wednesday for a reported \u00a318 million on a five-year deal and immediately paid tribute to the Dutchman he was signed to replace.<\/p>\n

“In my opinion, Edwin has been the best goalkeeper in the world whilst here at United,” he told reporters.<\/p>\n

“I hope to emulate him and spend a great number of years here and hopefully equal or even surpass the performance and contribution he made to the club.\u201d<\/p>\n

At only 20, the Spaniard is relatively inexperienced but he feels that the regular first-team action he saw in La Liga and Europa League with Atletico will stand him in good stead for United.<\/p>\n

“I’m young but I’m coming here on the back of two full seasons in La Liga, so I think I’ve got enough experience to contribute to such a big club as United.<\/p>\n

“The Premier League is known to be a more physical style of play than La Liga. There are a lot of high balls and a lot of play in the air but I hope to adapt to that fairly quickly.<\/p>\n

“With my own style, I hope to contribute to it being an all-round success.\u201d<\/p>\n

As well as setting himself big targets, the Spain Under-21 international revealed he has high hopes for the team.<\/p>\n

“Everybody wants to win the Premier League. I’d like to do that but I think also to aim to win the Champions League is realistic and that’s what we’re going to do,” he added.<\/p>\n
