There is a time when I measured the passage of time by the diminishing number of graduation party invites I got. These days I know I am getting on because of the number of people known to me who are dying, and it is a more depressing barometer.<\/p>\n

Edward Luyimbazi Mugalu’s demise is the latest to spark off the cruel sound of that ticking inner clock, and it has raised an alarm which I will come back to a little later.<\/p>\n

First I have got to toast to the memory of a man who was fated to be SC Villa’s general secretary for life.<\/p>\n

Not too many nicknames accruing from a person’s body parts are flattering, but the fond reference to Luyimbazi’s big eyes by football people epitomised the man’s nature; he was so nice and easy that I never once saw him irked by we annoying types in the press, and yet over the years there was plenty of provocation thrown at him.<\/p>\n

Luyimbazi’s passing comes in the wake of the recent ‘departures’ of Nyangweso, Denis Obua, Otti, Zzimwe and Ssimbwa among others, all outstanding sports administrators who were self-made.<\/p>\n

They don’t come like that anymore, yet they leave a vacuum that our schools, clubs, federations and government have got to seriously work towards filling. Times have changed; while these fallen leaders were ‘born’, the next generation will have to be ‘made’.<\/p>\n

Fufa-USL standoff<\/strong><\/p>\n

Where the past generation of administrators (Luyimbazi, Zzimwe and co) were pacifiers, the current crop is made up of antagonists. Take the present Fufa and the controversies that have littered their tenure. At one point or other they have been embroiled in some battle or other, not all of them in self defence but instead most of them of their deliberate instigation.<\/p>\n

The latest one against the Uganda Super League is vintage Fufa, and do not be fooled into thinking that it is an ordinary disagreement about how many teams should be promoted from the Big League.<\/p>\n

That is but the latest battlefront in a bigger war that has been simmering since the launch of the professional league.<\/p>\n

The problem this time is that this very avoidable wrangling threatens the collapse of a three-pronged sponsorship deal that is set to be the biggest in Uganda’s football history, and one which will grow even bigger as more corporate bodies inevitably clamour to get on board.<\/p>\n

Fufa and the USL are meant to meet on Thursday; in memory of the past, in respect of the present and for the sake of the future, Fufa should this once put the game before their egos and insatiable lusts.<\/p>\n

Let’s go scientific<\/strong><\/p>\n

What looks like the end of an era could actually be the beginning of one. I ran into Professor Era Mugisa the other day and, after dropping a heavy hint that he was about to ‘retire to the village’, he revealed that he and others had started an association called the Uganda Society For Sports Science and Physical Education. Professor Mugisa is an old mentor of mine, as indeed he is of several sportsmen who went through Makerere University where he ran the Games Union seemingly for eternity.<\/p>\n

Mugisa engineered the introduction of sports science at Makerere a decade or so ago, and the ‘gospel’ has since spread to other institutions of learning so much so that he had a very long list of graduates who have been invited to the AGM at Ndejje University on July 8, at which this new body will be ‘launched’.<\/p>\n

While in Germany last year I visited Cologne’s University of Sports Science and was amazed at the number of world champions they had produced, men and women who had learnt how to turn their bodies into winning machines through the right nutrition, proper conditioning etc. In this day and age Ugandans should move on from blind faith in their natural ability and learn to harness it with the help of science. This association is Mugisa’s parting gift to a nation.<\/p>\n
