The US government official had discussions with the Prime Minister of Cameroon, Philemon Yang at the Star Building. The Star Building discussions came shortly after his audience with the Minister of External Relations, Henri Eyebe Ayissi.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; I have had the opportunity to talk with the Prime Minister about a variety of issues relating to trade, investment, economic development, the forthcoming election expected in the second half of the year and regional politics&#8221;, Johnnie Carson said after the audience with Prime Minister Yang.<\/p>\n<p>Focusing on the forthcoming presidential election, Johnnie Carson in an interview stated, &#8220;We want to see in Cameroon free, fair and transparent elections in which all the people of this country will have the right as they have had in the past to vote freely for candidates of their choice&#8221;. The US, he said, hopes for a political space that will be opened to all candidates to compete freely within the norms of law. Prime Minister Yang and the visiting US official also discussed Cameroon&#8217;s elections governing institution, Elections Cameroon (ELECAM). &#8220;I did talk to the Prime Minister about the selection of the six additional board members of ELECAM, hoping that they will be individuals who are independent, have integrity and command respect&#8221;, Johnnie Carson disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>The US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs said his visit to Cameroon was to demonstrate the good and strong relations that exist between the United States of America and Cameroon, reiterating that the, &#8220;US regards this country as a friend and partner&#8221;. After discussions with the Prime Minister, he described that phase of the visit as being excellent so far, emphasising that it was designed to deepen and strengthen relations between Cameroon and US. The American government official was accompanied by a four-member delegation that included the US Ambassador to Cameroon, Robert P.
