FIFA\u2019s new security chief will arrive in the Southern Africa this week to investigate match fixing allegations in both South Africa and Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n

Chris Eaton is first going to Harare to look into match fixing allegations involving the Zimbabwe national team and two current Premier Soccer League players from 2009, and is to travel through Johannesburg, where another investigation into the activity of Niger referee Ibrahim Chaibou is underway, with two South African matches under the spotlight.<\/p>\n

The former policeman, charged by FIFA with cleaning up the game, could be seeking to interview South African Football Association members.<\/p>\n

\u201cContacts with various member associations are taking place as part of an on-going worldwide investigation into match fixing. We hope that you understand that we cannot provide you more details while the investigation is on-going,\u201d FIFA have said.<\/p>\n

Under suspicion are two of Bafana Bafana\u2019s pre-World Cup friendlies in which the team was awarded four penalties.<\/p>\n

Also unexplained is why the South African Football Association used referees from Niger, Togo and Kenya to handle the warm-up games against Bulgaria, Colombia and Denmark, contrary to their common practice of inviting officials from neighboring countries instead.<\/p>\n

Chaibou is being investigated by FIFA following unusual betting patterns that emerged for a game he refereed last month. Nigeria\u2019s 4-1 win over Argentina in Abuja has also led to allegations the visiting players hardly tried to play and helped to fix the score.<\/p>\n

Chaibou played eight minutes of stoppage time at the end of a friendly match and, in the final act of the game, gave Argentina a penalty without any foul being committed by Nigeria.<\/p>\n

Last May, Chaibou refereed South Africa\u2019s 5-0 win over Guatemala in Polokwane and gave Bafana Bafana two penalties.<\/p>\n

He was the fourth official when Kenyan Samwel Langat Kipngetich gave an even more bizarre performance at Soccer City when he handed South Africa two soft penalties and opponents Colombia one of their own for good measure in the match at the end of May last year.<\/p>\n

Chaibou also refereed a game between Nigeria and North Korea at Tombs on the eve of the World Cup, where he awarded another penalty to Nigeria.Eaton, who previously worked for Interpol, was recently appointed by FIFA to head a special investigation unit into match fixing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
