{"id":448884,"date":"2011-06-27T14:19:18","date_gmt":"2011-06-27T14:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/27\/kanimba-advises-cooperatives-to-open-centralised-marketplace\/"},"modified":"2011-06-27T14:19:18","modified_gmt":"2011-06-27T14:19:18","slug":"kanimba-advises-cooperatives-to-open-centralised-marketplace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/27\/kanimba-advises-cooperatives-to-open-centralised-marketplace\/","title":{"rendered":"Kanimba Advises Cooperatives to Open Centralised Marketplace"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"40.1164725458\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newtimes.co.rw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/newtimes180.jpg\" alt=\"The New Times (Kigali)\" title=\"Visit The New Times (Kigali)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jean Pierre Bucyensenge<\/p>\n<p>25 June 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Nyanza \u2014 The Minister of Trade and Industry, Thursday advised agro-based cooperatives to set up market outlets if they are to easily attract more customers.<\/p>\n<p>Francois Kanimba, was speaking in Nyanza District during a consultative meeting with local leaders, stakeholders and cooperative representatives from the eight districts in the Southern Province.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting aimed at discussing how farmers can access markets for their products.<\/p>\n<p>Kanimba noted that there was need for a centralised site where large quantities of agricultural produce is continuously sold as a way of attracting many clients.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Merchants can&#8217;t spend their time looking for products scattered among small vendors or at every cooperative&#8217;s offices. Instead of buying 100 kilos here, 200 there, 50 elsewhere and so on, they will go where they can have the quantities they need,&#8221; Kanimba observed.<\/p>\n<p>The minister refuted claims by some farmers and cooperatives that their produce has exceeded the demand.<\/p>\n<p>He cited the example of traders who still import cassava from Uganda because of limited production in Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The issue with farmers is not that there are no markets for their produce, but that they are not well organised,&#8221; he noted.<\/p>\n<p>At the meeting, it was agreed that provincial and district leaders take the responsibilities to assist farmers set up sites to conduct wholesale business.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to The New Times shortly after the meeting, the Governor of the Southern Province, Alphonse Munyentwari, promised to assist organise farmers develop strategies to bring in more buyers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will help cooperatives in setting up a structure where local farmers will be the first targets.
