{"id":448868,"date":"2011-06-27T14:48:12","date_gmt":"2011-06-27T14:48:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/27\/nato-aims-to-kill-gaddafi-says-report\/"},"modified":"2011-06-27T14:48:12","modified_gmt":"2011-06-27T14:48:12","slug":"nato-aims-to-kill-gaddafi-says-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/27\/nato-aims-to-kill-gaddafi-says-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Nato Aims to Kill Gaddafi, Says Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p>A United States congressman says the top U.S. military commander in the international military campaign against Libya has admitted that Nato is trying to kill Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi.<\/p>\n<p><em>T<\/em><em>he Cable<\/em>, a reporting service of the Washington-based <em>Foreign Policy<\/em> magazine, reports that Mike Turner, a member of the Armed Services Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, said the admission was made by Admiral Samuel Locklear, commander of the Nato Joint Operations Command in Italy.<\/p>\n<div readability=\"34.2905405405\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/csi\/00171343_763b6d2d1ea33e12d996de0138143d64\/w260x.jpg\" width=\"260\" height=\"173\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.icc-cpi.int\">ICC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The judges who ordered Muammar al-Gaddafi&#8217;s arrest: From left, Sylvia Steiner of Brazil, Sanji Monageng of Botswana and Cuno Tarfusser of Italy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Turner, a Republican opponent of President Barack Obama, is opposed to U.S. government support for Nato air strikes against Libya.<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"http:\/\/thecable.foreignpolicy.com\/posts\/2011\/06\/24\/exclusive_top_us_admiral_admits_we_are_trying_to_kill_qaddafi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told the news service<\/a> that the United Nations Security Council had authorized the imposition of a blockade of the Tripoli regime, a no-fly zone over Libya and the protection of civilians.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And Admiral Locklear explained that the scope of civil protection was being interpreted to permit the removal of the chain of command of Gaddafi&#8217;s military, which includes Gaddafi,&#8221; Turner reportedly told <em>The Cable<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believed that we were [targeting Gaddafi] but that confirmed it&#8230; I believe the scope that Nato is pursuing is beyond what is contemplated in civil protection, so they&#8217;re exceeding the mission.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last Friday Turner joined other Republicans, and some Democrats, to reject a bill authorizing U.S. involvement in the military action against Libya.
