{"id":448754,"date":"2011-06-27T18:23:25","date_gmt":"2011-06-27T18:23:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/27\/court-remands-13-stowaways\/"},"modified":"2011-06-27T18:23:25","modified_gmt":"2011-06-27T18:23:25","slug":"court-remands-13-stowaways","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/27\/court-remands-13-stowaways\/","title":{"rendered":"Court Remands 13 Stowaways"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div>The Takoradi Circuit Court \u201cA\u201d on Wednesday remanded 13 dock workers for attempted stowaway, conspiracy to commit crime and unlawful entry.<\/p>\n<p>The accused are Ebenezer Mensah, 24, Francis Atiso, 25, Alfred<br \/>Assuman, 23, Alex Abraham Amoh, 23, Emmanuel Otoo, 28, and Richard Ato<br \/>Darko, 25.<\/p>\n<p>The rest are Robert Amoah, 22, Mustapha Kadri, 28, Francis<br \/>Awortwi, 24, Daniel Boateng, 23, Emmanuel Affum, 24, Samuel Asafuah,<br \/>28 and Thomas Agyei, 29. Their pleas were not taken and they are to re-appear on June 28 this year. Prosecuting, Police Inspector Theodore Alhassan, said the accused persons were casual labourers working with the Ghana Dock Labour<br \/>Company at the Takoradi Port.<\/p>\n<p>He said on June 17 this year, M\/V VERA \u201cD\u201d, a foreign cargo<br \/>vessel, arrived at the Takoradi Port to load and discharge containers.<br \/>Inspector Alhassan said Mensah and Atiso had a hint that the<br \/>vessel would be leaving for Europe and planned to stowaway on it.<br \/>He said they managed to find their way into the harbour by using<br \/>a hired canoe from New Takoradi and sneaked onto the vessel with the<br \/>aid of a bamboo stick and hid in one of the hatches.<\/p>\n<p>He said Assuamn, Amoh, Otoo, Darko, Amoah, Awortwi, Boateng and<br \/>Affum also managed to outwit security at the Port at different times,<br \/>sneaked into the vessel and hid themselves in the hatch.<br \/>Inspector Alhassan said Kadri who was lawfully booked to work on<br \/>the vessel, refused to go out after the close of work and hid himself<br \/>in the hatch as well.<\/p>\n<p>He said Assuah and Agyei hid themselves in a life boat.<br \/>Inspector Alhassan said the crew of the vessel detected an<br \/>unusual noise in the hatches and the accused persons were found in<br \/>their hideouts during a search.<\/p>\n<p>He said the accused were arrested and handed over to the Police.<br \/>Inspector Alhassan said investigations conducted on the 13<br \/>stowaways revealed that Darko and Kadri had earlier been bonded by the<br \/>Takoradi Circuit Court \u201cB\u201d to be of good behaviour for 12 months for a<br \/>similar offence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>See original here:<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> The Takoradi Circuit Court \u201cA\u201d on Wednesday remanded 13 dock workers for attempted stowaway, conspiracy to commit crime and unlawful entry.
