Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) from the northern zone of the country have called for an incident-free congress at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Sunyani.<\/p>\n
They noted that the party needed unity before, during and after the congress to pave the way for a resounding victory for the NDC in the 2012 elections.<\/p>\n
A communiqu\u00c3\u00a9 issued at the end of their three-day conference in Kumasi, therefore, urged the rank and file of the party to put unity first since that was the surest way of prosecuting the general elections successfully.<\/p>\n
The MMDCEs commended President Mills for his commitment to enhancing the performance of the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) through the provision of logistics aimed at enhancing the mobility of assembly staff and assembly members.<\/p>\n
Appreciating the presence of the President at the conference, the communiqu\u00c3\u00a9 said, ‘His thought-provoking, instructive and motivational address has rekindled, rejuvenated and renewed our commitment to the realisation of the Better Ghana Agenda.’<\/p>\n
It further acknowledged the steps taken by the government to operationalise Legislative Instrument 1961 to further deepen the decentralisation process.<\/p>\n
The MMDCEs pledged their commitment to the Ghana Shared Growth and Development agenda which, in their view, was the vehicle for the accelerated development of the communities.<\/p>\n
The MMDCEs noted the reality of climate change and gave the assurance that they would double their efforts at initiating measures to combat the threat.<\/p>\n
They also took notice of the afforestation programme being undertaken by the government and appealed to the Ministries of Agriculture, and Lands and Forestry to strive to sustain it.<\/p>\n
‘In this regard, we suggest the revival of the mobi-squad concept to keep track of the maintenance and greening of the environment.’<\/p>\n
The MMDCEs promised to work hard to strengthen the social safety nets including the Ghana School Feeding Programme, as well as other initiatives in forestry, agriculture and communications.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
