That may-be buyers have opted not to buy commoditoes from the market for fear of catching diseases, is understandable.<\/p>\n<p>For the past six months, authorities in Moyo Town Council have failed to clear heaps of garbage at the collection centre. The council does not have a truck eversince it broke down and a dumpsite. With this chaos, vendors now dump rubbish anywhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disease-prone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The situation, say residents, may lead to an outbreak of cholera and other diseases since flies have taken over the place. Food vendors, who operate their business some few metres away from the garbage heaps, said it is rare to get customers nowadays since the smell discourages them.<\/p>\n<p>One of the residents near the heaps of rubbish, Ms Amelia Rijoo, said recently the town council authorities employed casual labourers who buried some of the rubbish in the same spot.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is difficult to eat around here and visitors coming to my home spend less time compared to the past. I see a great danger of cholera outbreak,&#8221; Ms Rijoo said.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairman of Gaa-gaa II Market Vendors Association, Mr Pascal Tavulega, blamed the past leadership of the town for giving less attention to proper hygiene.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We pay daily market dues and the hotel operators pay licences every financial year.We are sad to stay near polluted environment which exposes us to diseases,&#8221; Mr Tavulega said.<\/p>\n<p>The Town Clerk, Mr Harold Wejuli, told Daily Monitor yesterday that the council has acquired land for dumping garbage but has not been cleared by the National Environment Management Authority (Nema).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Actually it is Nema letting us down because we are waiting for an environmental impact assessment to clear us to start using the place,&#8221; Mr Wejuli said.<\/p>\n<p>The market now looks like a dumpsite yet hundreds of people earn a living from it.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<fieldset>\n<legend align=\"center\"><strong>More News on allAfrica.com<\/strong><\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<p>AllAfrica &#8211; All the Time<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>See more here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201106270042.html\" title=\"Garbage Heaps Choke Moyo\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Garbage Heaps Choke Moyo<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Martin Okudi and Felix Warom 24 June 2011 Approaching Moyo Market, one is greeted by a strong stench coming from uncollected garbage.
