{"id":447775,"date":"2011-06-25T20:39:57","date_gmt":"2011-06-25T20:39:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/25\/forces-attack-mali-al-qaeda-camp\/"},"modified":"2011-06-25T20:39:57","modified_gmt":"2011-06-25T20:39:57","slug":"forces-attack-mali-al-qaeda-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/25\/forces-attack-mali-al-qaeda-camp\/","title":{"rendered":"Forces attack Mali al-Qaeda camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"61.7065462754\"><span><span>25 June 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>16:39 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mauritanian and Malian soldiers have raided an al-Qaeda camp in western Mali, defence sources said.<\/p>\n<p>A Malian security source said there had been &#8220;fierce fighting&#8221; at the base in the Wagadou forest region on Friday, including the use of heavy weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Wagadou, near Mauritania&#8217;s border, is an area where al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) are known to operate.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Mali and Mauritania agreed to lead a joint operation to tackle the al-Qaeda offshoot.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8216;Wounded evacuated&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The attack took place at about 1745 local time (1745 GMT) on Friday and involved air strikes, according to a Mauritanian source cited by AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p>The source said the &#8220;terrorists&#8221; had struck back with &#8220;heavy weapons&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-13917344#story_continues_2\">Continue reading the main story<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Emerged during Algerian war in the 1990s as Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC)<\/li>\n<li>Declared allegiance to al-Qaeda in 2006, changing its name accordingly<\/li>\n<li>Operates in the lawless Sahara desert regions between Niger, Mauritania, Mali and Algeria<\/li>\n<li>Carries out frequent terror attacks and kidnappings for ransom or to demand the release of prisoners<\/li>\n<li>Killed some 26 people in an attack on UN offices in Algiers in December 2007<\/li>\n<li>Suspected members have been arrested in several Western European countries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The definitive toll on the enemy side will only be known at dawn but it will be heavy.
