Awka –\u00a0 The Chief Judge of Anambra, Justice Paul Obidigwe, has discharged seven inmates and granted bail to 16 others during a visit to Awka prison on Friday.<\/p>\n

Some other suspects were refused bail for their alleged involvement in capital offences, including armed robbery and murder.<\/p>\n

In all, 42 cases were tried. Many of the accused persons awaiting trial were either accused of armed robbery, murder, kidnap, stealing or burglary, while those granted bail got it on condition of ill health.<\/p>\n

The Chief Judge said that the visit was part of the activities lined up for his retirement. He said that it also became necessary following the ongoing strike by judiciary workers in the state.<\/p>\n

Obidigwe said he had intervened in the five-month-old strike and expressed the hope that before his retirement on June 30, the striking workers would resume work.<\/p>\n

He called for the appointment of new judges as their number had dropped while cases were on the increase.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Assistant Controller of Awka Prisons, Mr Anthony Chigbata, told newsmen that the 238 capacity prison now houses 508 inmates and expressed fears over the outbreak of epidemic.<\/p>\n

One of the discharged suspects, Chukwuma Ebubealor, 27, told newsmen that he had spent seven years in prison for alleged burglary.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo other happier man is on earth than I today,\u201d Ebubealor said while commending the chief judge. (NAN)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
