AWKA\u2014 THE lingering communal crisis between Owerre Ezukala and Ogbunka communities both in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State yesterday took a violent dimension when two people were killed, while about eight houses were burnt down.
About eleven people sustained injuries during the clash.<\/p>\n

The two villages at the centre of the crisis were Awuka in Ogbunka and Mkputu in Owerre Ezukala which had been locked in a bitter tussle over land since 1987. Most of the residents have fled the two villages and following yesterday\u2019s clash, the police and the army have started parading the area.<\/p>\n

Among places burnt was the Owerre Ezukala Boy\u2019s Secondary School where the principal\u2019s office was looted, while members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, serving in the school were beaten and chased out of their rooms and their belongings carted away.<\/p>\n

Caretaker Committee Chairman of Owerre Ezukala Town Union, Mr Alphonsus Ikegwu told newsmen in Awka yesterday that his people have been at the receiving end since the crisis began because of their location in the local government area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
