{"id":447343,"date":"2011-06-24T19:46:05","date_gmt":"2011-06-24T19:46:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/24\/return-unused-medicines-for-proper-disposal\/"},"modified":"2011-06-24T19:46:05","modified_gmt":"2011-06-24T19:46:05","slug":"return-unused-medicines-for-proper-disposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/24\/return-unused-medicines-for-proper-disposal\/","title":{"rendered":"Return Unused Medicines For Proper Disposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div>Mr Edward Amporful, Chief Pharmacist at the Cocoa Clinic in Accra, on Friday advised the public to return all unused, unwanted and expired drugs to the Clinic for proper disposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnwanted or expired drugs are the main causes of accidental<br \/>poisoning of people, leading to drug abuse by teenagers at home, so<br \/>patients do not have any reason to get excess medicines at home,\u201d he<br \/>said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Amporful made the call at a workshop in Accra to educate the<br \/>public on the importance of following the regime of prescriptions and<br \/>the consequences of inappropriate disposal of unused medicines.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop was part of the Clinic\u2019s sensitization programme,<br \/>dubbed, \u201dDisposal of Unused Medicines Programme\u201d that seeks to help<br \/>reduce the misuse of unwanted drugs in homes that could result in the<br \/>loss of lives.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Amporful stated that many people did not understand the<br \/>diseases they had and the importance of the medicines that were<br \/>administered to them and sometimes refused to follow prescriptions.<\/p>\n<p>These unused drugs, according to him, were left to expire and<br \/>sometimes passed on to others without the advice of a professional<br \/>health care provider or were accidentally used by unsuspecting<br \/>persons, especially children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been many instances where children are rushed to the<br \/>Clinic as a result of unwanted or unused medicines that these children<br \/>have swallowed and because the drugs have been left for a long time,<br \/>the labels fade, making it difficult for us to identify them to help<br \/>treat the patients,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Amporful advised the public to always understand and strictly<br \/>follow prescriptions that were given to them to prevent accumulation<br \/>of medicines at home.<\/p>\n<p>He added that medicines should not be shared with other persons<br \/>due to perceived illness without considering their harmful effects on<br \/>the individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Amporful said the Clinic had made arrangements with the Food<br \/>and Drugs Board (FDB) to return unwanted medicines collected from<br \/>people to for proper disposal and urged the public to send such drugs<br \/>to any Cocoa Clinic pharmacy in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do not have to disclose your identity to anyone; receptacles<br \/>and bins have been provided at the pharmacy to receive all unused,<br \/>unwanted and expired medicines,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Excerpt from: <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Mr Edward Amporful, Chief Pharmacist at the Cocoa Clinic in Accra, on Friday advised the public to return all unused, unwanted and expired drugs to the Clinic for proper disposal. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":447344,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-447343","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-local-news"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
