ABUJA \u2013 Speaker, House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, has promised to urgently engage whoever emerged as the Attorney-General of the Federation in the new cabinet in order to map out strategies to ensure compliance with the Freedom of Information Act, also known as the Right to Information Act .<\/p>\n

Tambuwal told members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Central Working Committee, CWC, who paid him a courtesy visit yesterday, that to fast-track the implementation of the FOI Act, the House of Representatives would constitute a committee on reform of government institutions and processes as provided for in the relevant sections of the Act.<\/p>\n

According to him, the committee, when established, will complement the work of the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Government Affairs in relations to overseeing the work of the Attorney-General.<\/p>\n

Alhaji Tambuwal then urged President Goodluck Jonathan to constitute a Presidential task force for the speedy and effective implementation of the FOI Act.<\/p>\n

He also called on journalists to be proactive in their practice by warning politicians of impending dangers rather than waiting for things to get out of hands before writing.<\/p>\n

He said:\u00a0 \u201cWe are determined to chart a new course for Nigeria. The NUJ must be a strategic partner in this regard.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn our part, we are conscious of our very poor perception by members of the public and are determined to rebuild our image. As a first step towards this rebuilding exercise, we shall heed the cry of Nigerians for a review of the running cost of governance in Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
