ABUJA \u2014 National Executive Committee, NEC, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is to meet soon to approve a date and procedures for a national convention of the party to pick a new set of national officers, it emerged yesterday.<\/p>\n

The decision of the party to bring forward the national convention follows evolving vacancies in the top leadership. At least five national officers of the party have been listed down for ministerial appointment leaving a vacuum that the party is believed to be inclined to fill.
Besides the acting national chairman, Dr. Mohammed Haliru Bello, who has been screened for ministerial appointment to represent Kebbi State, the national auditor, Dr. Sam Ortom from Benue State and Chief Olusola Oke, the party\u2019s national legal adviser, have also reportedly been pencilled down.<\/p>\n

The national treasurer, Chief Williams Makinde, from Delta State; national organising secretary, Chief Uche Secondus, from Rivers State and national women leader, Hanjiya Inna Ciroma, from Borno State, are also among those allegedly listed by their respective states for consideration.<\/p>\n

Based on the ensuing vacancies in the top leadership, Vanguard learnt yesterday that the outgoing NWC would call for a meeting of the PDP NEC which would consider the need for a national convention.<\/p>\n

Section 12.72 of the PDP constitution gives the NEC the singular power to convene a national convention and constitute a national convention committee.<\/p>\n

The party has zoned the office of national chairman to the Northeast and among the candidates for the top party position being mentioned are Alhaji Bamangar Tukur, Chairman of the African Round Table, former Governor Adamu Muazu respectively from Adamawa and Bauchi States. Both men are, however, reportedly facing opposition from their state branches of the party.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
