Akure \u2013 Civil servants in Ondo State on Thursday embarked on indefinite strike, to back up their demand for payment of the N18,000 minimum by government.<\/p>\n

Government activities in Akure, the state capital, were paralysed as a result of the industrial action.<\/p>\n

The state chapter of the NLC had on Wednesday directed its members to stay at home as from Thursday after the seven-day ultimatum given to the state government.<\/p>\n

All\u00a0 government offices were shut down following the NLC\u2019s directive.<\/p>\n

Some policemen were stationed at the gate leading to the governor\u2019s office, while all other government agencies and parastatal were deserted.<\/p>\n

At Oke Eda Chief Magistrate\u2019s complex, gates leading to the court premises were also locked, while litigants and others who had business to transact at the court were turned back by NLC officials who manned the gate as early as 7. 00 am.<\/p>\n

Offices of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Ondo State Micro Credit Agency and the Scholarship Board at Oke Eda were also shut.<\/p>\n

The three gates leading to the High Court complex were also locked by NLC officials, while some staff members of the judiciary who had reported early were turned back.<\/p>\n

Mr Femi Ogunde, the JUSUN Chairman in the state, told NAN that judicial staff were members of the NLC and had to obey the union\u2019s directive.<\/p>\n

Both public primary and secondary schools in the state capital were also affected by the strike.<\/p>\n

A Correspondent who visited Fiwasaye Girls School, Oyemekun Grammar School and St Louis Grammar School in Akure, reports that students were seen returning home, bacause there were no teachers to teach them.<\/p>\n

Mr Akuresanmi, the state Chairman of Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN),\u00a0 accused government of paying lip service to workers\u2019 plight.<\/p>\n

He said that government refused to do anything in spite of the union\u2019s ultimatum.<\/p>\n

Mr Solomon Adelegan, the Chairman, Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, vowed that the workers would not accept anything less that the N18,000 as minimum wage. (NAN)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
