Sofapaka and Mathare players skip training to prepare for league encounters today.<\/p>\n

Sofapaka and Mathare United players, John Baraza, Bob Mugalia, John Onami, Titus Mulama, Osborne Monday and Mathare’s Anthony Kimani were absent as Harambee Stars stepped up their training for this weekend’s clash with Sudan in the LG Cup friendly.<\/p>\n

The two clubs have Premier League commitments today with Mathare United facing coastals Bandari while Sofapaka will be seeking to revive their flagging perfomance against Thika United.<\/p>\n

Coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno has reiterated his confidence in the local squad saying this is a great opportunity for home based players to prove their worth against a good side.<\/p>\n

Zico referred to the Nile Basin invitational tournament in Egypt where Kenya played Sudan and won 1-0. “This is a great opportunity for us to gauge the weight of our home based players. If you remember when we played Sudan in Egypt, we did not have any overseas based players including all the Sofapaka players but we still beat Sudan,” Otieno said.<\/p>\n

Both the senior team and Under 23 sides have been training together ahead of their weekend fixtures. The U-23s face Uganda in an All Africa Games qualifier to be played on Sunday at the Nyayo National Stadium.<\/p>\n

“The blend of the teams training together is good orientation for the youngsters to prepare themselves for promotion to the senior team because they represent the immediate future of Kenyan football,” according to U-23 coach Leonard Saleh. who is also Zico’s assistant.<\/p>\n

The Sudanese arrived yesterday and were due to hold their first training session at the Nyayo National Stadium yesterday.<\/p>\n

The two teams have had contrasting fortunes in the ongoing qualifiers for next year’s African Cup of Nations with Sudan joint top in Group “L” while Kenya are struggling to catch up with Group “J” leaders Uganda.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere Young Africans of Dar-es-Salaam popularly known as Yanga have lined up a high profile friendly against last year’s KPL runners-up Gor Mahia today from 4pm at the Sheikh Abeid Karume’s Stadium in Arusha. This is part of Yanga’s build-up ahead of the Kagame Cup starting this week. A Gor contingent of 18 players and seven officials left yesterday for the match in Arusha.<\/p>\n

The squad will be under the tutelage of assistant coach Anaba Awono of Cameroon in the absence of head coach Zedekiah Otieno, who is on international duty with Harambee Stars where he is also head coach.<\/p>\n

The travelling party comprises: Ronnie Kagunzi, Gradus Ochieng (goalkeepers); Captain Julius Owino, Christopher Wekesa, Frederick Otieno, Collins Omondi and Solomon Nasio (defenders) and Haji Mwachoki, Tony Onyango, Dennis Okoth, Ivan Anguyo, Duncan Makori, Roy Okal and Wycliffe Opondo (midfielders) and Wycliffe Ochomo, Ezekiel Odera, Moses Odhiambo and Demond Selenge (strikers).<\/p>\n

Other officials are Charles Omondi, Zablon Otieno (assistant coaches), Maurice ‘Ole Tunda’ Ouma (team manager) and Samson Ogutu (team doctor).<\/p>\n
