Nairobi \u2014 After missing the cut by three shots in the 2011 Amateur Championship in England last week, Kenya’s top-ranked amateur golfer Stefan Andersen is back home to try his luck.<\/p>\n

This year’s Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship’s first round is on Thursday afternoon at the par 71 Limuru Country Club course.<\/p>\n

Andersen is among Kenya’s top 64 single-figure handicap golfers who listed their names in the event which was initially open to golfers playing off handicap nine and under but was reduced to seven under following an overwhelming demand.<\/p>\n

Over the past three or so years the Amateur Championship has attracted only 38 to 42 players. The last time it had a field of more than 60 was when it was hosted by Limuru about six years ago.<\/p>\n

It is also the first event in Kenya to be included in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WGR).<\/p>\n

Because of the big entry, no player was given a bye, meaning each one of the 64 competitors will be in action right from Thursday’s first round.<\/p>\n

Being the best, Andersen heads the top side of the draw at the first nine where he will take on Kenya Air Force’s S.K. Kimutai while at the bottom of the first nine will be home player James Karanja.<\/p>\n

Making comeback in national scene<\/strong><\/p>\n

Also fighting it out from the first nine will be one of Limuru’s leading players, Simon Mwangi, an experienced matchplay golfer who is drawn against Karen’s Anthony Murage, while Muthaiga’s Evans Vitisia is pitted against youngster Christopher Andrea.<\/p>\n

At the back nine, the top seed is Golf Park’s Joseph Karanja, who is drawn against J. Katitu. Karanja’s club mate David Opati, who is making a comeback in the national scene after picking up an injury in April, is drawn at the bottom against E. Kiarie.<\/p>\n

Other top contenders at the back nine include Tony Omulli, also from the Golf Park, national team captain Francis Kimani and another international amateur, Jay Sandhu from Royal Nairobi Golf Club.<\/p>\n

The first round winners proceed to Friday’s second round while the quarter-finals and the semis are scheduled for Saturday. The 36-hole is set for final the following day.<\/p>\n

The Kenya Golf Union has also organised an 18-hole stableford subsidiary event for Sunday morning.<\/p>\n
