AT least 35 people are dead and 200 injured after two high-speed trains crashed into each other in eastern China yesterday.<\/p>\n
The first train was traveling south from the regional capital of Hangzhou on Saturday evening when it lost power and stalled in a lightning strike, according to reports.<\/p>\n
It was then hit from behind by the second bullet train in Wenzhou city.<\/p>\n
The first four carriages of the moving train fell about 65 to 100 feet off a bridge onto the ground.One carriage ended up in a vertical position, leaning against the viaduct.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Railways said in a statement on Sunday that the last two carriages of the stalled train also derailed.<\/p>\n
Two foreigners, whose nationalities were unclear, were among the dead, according to an official in the Zhejiang provincial emergency office.China is spending billions on constructing a high-speed rail network<\/p>\n
Last month, it launched a Beijing to Shanghai high-speed line, whose trains travel at a maximum speed of 186 miles per hour.<\/p>\n
The speed was cut from the originally planned 217 mph after questions were raised about safety.<\/p>\n
It’s also faced criticism for its cost – 215bn yuan ( \u00a321bn). In the past four weeks it has also been blighted by power outages and other problems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
