IBADAN \u2013 GOVERNOR Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and his immediate predecessor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala yesterday traded words over Ajimobi\u2019s sack of three senior civil servants.<\/p>\n

While the former governor accused governor Ajimobi of vendetta over the sack, the governor however, said his government was not prepared to continue with a tradition of keeping dead woods and those who would not benefit the state.<\/p>\n

The affected workers are two Permanent Secretaries; Mrs. Bunmi Oyesina (Ministry of Justice), Mr. D. O Oladele , (Ministry of Lands and Housing) and the Accountant General, Mr. Babatunde Yussuf.<\/p>\n

Akala described the sudden retirement of the civil servants by the Ajimobi administration as callous and a sign of intimidation to other workers in the state.<\/p>\n

The ex-governor through his spokesman, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said while the former governor retained all the 16 Permanent Secretaries he inherited on assumption of office in 2007 from the previous government and even promoted some into that hierarchy, Ajimobi promptly retired two Permanent Secretaries and the newly appointed Accountant-General of the State in a most bizarre manner.<\/p>\n

Akala said the governor called them to his office and told them \u201cYou are sacked\u201d telling the people of the state to be prepared for more of such actions.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cOur people should brace up for more of such infraction on their fundamental rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll not keep dead woods in govt \u2013 Ajimobi<\/p>\n

Reacting to Akala\u2019s outburst, governor Ajimobi through his Special Assistant on Media, Dr. Festus Adedayo said, \u201cThe new Oyo State under Governor Abiola Ajimobi has excellence as its watchwords and as such, would not suffer fools gladly, in the name of continuing with a tradition of keeping dead woods and those who will not benefit the state.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOyelade is apparently a man in love with the theatre; as such, his invention of a scene from an absurd movie. Even in a military regime, a civil servant would not be called and told \u201cYou are sacked!\u201d Rather, one of the Permanent Secretaries retired voluntarily and the other one\u2019s services were found not to be needed by the Oyo State Government. In the latter, there was a brotherly discussion of the issue between her and government and an agreement reached on why government, in the interest of the people, must appoint a more competent hand into the office.<\/p>\n

He continued that the fact that Alao-Akala inherited 16 Permanent Secretaries and didn\u2019t find anything wrong with their output was not an indication of benevolence. It may signal a deficiency. This was vivid in the quality of institutions the former governor left behind in Oyo State. Governor Ajimobi will promote excellence in civil service but will not, in the spirit of keeping with a tradition of incompetence, reward mediocrity and downgrade excellence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
