Freetown — Monday June 20 was Fathers’ Day in the United States and I am sure Sierra Leoneans in the country’s 13th District (The Diaspora) will join me in sending hearty greetings to President Ernest Bai Koroma, the FATHER OF THE NATION, who as Head of State of Sierra Leone, has led our nation by example and deserves to be honoured too on this day. It is an undeniable fact that under President Koroma, Sierra Leone is in good hands and in this short article, I hope to highlight some of the President’s attributes that qualify him as a worthy father of our nation.

A father is supposed to be caring for his family and if this is so, this is a quality embedded in our President that qualifies him for honour when Fathers Day is being celebrated. Sierra Leone still has socio-economic problems, though the government is doing its very best to make life comfortable for the people but one thing that even the critics of the President would admit is that we have a leader at the helm who is up to the game and still exploring ways and means to change the bad socio-economic times. Unlike other leaders who are not concerned about their people’s problems, President Koroma does care a lot and even his detractors can admit this. When the cost of living escalated recently and the prices of food, fuel and transportation seemed to be going through the roof, President Koroma acted decisively to bring down the prices. He listened to the cries of the people, like a loving and concerned father.

A father is loving and forgiving and in no person is this quality exemplified as President Ernest Koroma. Before he was elected Standard Bearer of the All People’s Congress (APC), some members of the party fought Mr. Koroma to a standstill. They brought all kinds of lawsuits against him which could have derailed his presidential quest had God not intervened. Yet, when he became President, Dr. Koroma showed no tinge of anger or vindictiveness to them and appointed those who had fought him to important positions in his government. To this day, President Koroma is a loving brother and father to those who fought him. That is why members of the party should eschew anger, vindictiveness, unforgiveness and revenge because whatever we say, the fact is clear that we are not representative of H.E. President Ernest Koroma if we do not forgive each other in the party or nation.

If you claim to be a follower of President Koroma and you are full of malice, revenge, bitterness and vindictiveness for your fellow party members, you are not a true follower of the President. Read some of the Sierra Leone newspapers and see how some editors and writers trip in fighting hard to destroy the reputation of the President with lies, vicious and false allegations and unfair and biased analyses of the President’s stewardship, but the President has never before been seen complaining about the press, not to mention threaten or jail them.

President Koroma has set a once-in-a-lifetime record as the President under whose tenure no journalist has ever been arrested or jailed for defaming the Head of State or attacking the Government. He is equally tolerant to all his political opponents and the jails of Sierra Leone are free of political prisoners. POLITICAL PRISONER is a word that has become a taboo in Sierra Leone. Whenever the President attends a public function, he willingly takes pictures with journalists who bitterly criticise him. These journalists proudly display the photos in their newspapers. He does not describe them as hypocrites because, first of all, he is a mature and normal person and secondly as a politician he knows that he has to embrace everybody, even those who criticize him or do not support him.

A father inspires his children and household and it is one of the impressive qualities of President Koroma. Whatever the problems, the President is always on top of them. He is always positive and he greets the world everyday with a smiling face which inspires those of us working with him and the people we serve. He is a man who dwells more on solutions than complaints.

A father is unbiased and treats his children equally. This is so with President Koroma. He is the best boss to work with because he treats everybody equally and makes sure that he makes everybody feel loved and needed. Anybody close to President Koroma will tell you that if he detests anything, it is gossip, frivolous complaints and character-assassination. In his presence, he wants to hear solutions and efforts being made to fix a problem. Like a true father, President Koroma never takes sides or knee-jack decisions. He always gives the other party a fair chance and as such President Koroma is able to work with people of diverse temperaments. It is difficult to meet people who complain that they had been biasedly and unfairly treated by President Koroma. Dr. Koroma’s development projects are spread all over the country. Every district is being given a share of the national pie .This is how fairly our President runs the nation.

I can go on and on and on.

As we enjoy our dinners from loving family members today, let us wish the Father of The Nation a HAPPY FATHERS’ DAY. May God continue to bless, guide and protect him.
