Barcelona<\/a> off the top of their European perch.<\/p>\nThe former Porto boss, who won the treble in his first season with the Portuguese outfit, moved to Chelsea on Wednesday after a release clause in his contract was triggered.<\/p>\n
Roman Abramovich’s desire to win the Champions League has seen five managers leave Stamford Bridge, partly for their failure to bring the prestigious trophy home, and Wilkins believes it will be a difficult task for the 33-year-old to bring the Russian billionaire what he wants most.<\/p>\n
\u201cChelsea have tried lots of managers in their search for the holy grail, the Champions League,\u201d Wilkins told Sky Sports<\/em>.<\/p>\n\u201cThey had, in my opinion, a wonderful coach last year in Carlo Ancelotti but now they\u2019ve gone again for Villas-Boas, so we\u2019ll so how we go.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe had a magnificent first season there with Porto having won the championship quite comfortably and he follows in the footsteps of Jose Mourinho, so we will wait and see.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s done exceptionally well in his situation as a coach up until now.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve had lots of older coaches come in at Stamford Bridge and not done as well so we have to give this man a bit of credit in what he\u2019s done up until now and we\u2019ll see where he goes from here.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a very difficult task for him because to knock Barcelona off their perch as the kings of Europe, and probably the world when they play the World Football Championship in Japan in a few months time.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s taken a long time since Carlo was deposed as coach at Stamford Bridge, so therefore they want to get cracking.”<\/p>\n
Wilkins feels that Villas-Boas deserves to be given time and patience in his new surroundings.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s give this young man a chance,\u201d Wilkins continued.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s obviously done exceptionally well.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis man management skills that I can read from the players that he has worked with have been first class so that will be required at Stamford Bridge because these are big players, big guys and very nice men, I\u2019ve got to say.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt will be interesting to see how this man goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n
