\"Mr.Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has appealed to Ghanaians to be patient with governments to enable them deliver on policies or initiatives meant to benefit the people and develop the country.<\/p>\n

Mr. Kufuor says most of the policies that government comes up with are long term plans which need time to mature so Ghanaians should be more tolerant and understanding in order not to derail government and retard their own and the country\u2019s progress.<\/p>\n

He was speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM Wednesday from the United States where he was awarded the 2011 World Food Prize for creating and implementing government policies that alleviated hunger and poverty in Ghana.<\/p>\n

He received the honour together with the former President of Brazil, Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva.<\/p>\n

Mr. Kufuor said often people want instant results when policies are implemented even when it is not supposed to be the case adding that unless we put a stop to that, we would always have governments doing \u2018touch-and-go\u2019 on projects.<\/p>\n

He cited an example of the Presidential Special Initiatives (PSIs) implemented by his administration saying even though the impact of the PSI on Oil Palm, Cassava among others was meant to be felt in the long term, Ghanaians criticized the policy and called it a failure after the NPP left the office even though the contrary was the case.<\/p>\n

Under the PSI on Oil Palm, about 60,000 hectares of oil palm was cultivated between 2004 and 2008 with a projection of reaching about 100,000 before the end of 2008.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr. Kufuor said the policy had not failed because the land was still there and there were people who were still willing to farm so if the policy had been sustained, the acreage could have expanded instead of being condemned as an outright failure.<\/p>\n

He therefore urged people to be understanding of government policies and patiently wait for the full benefits because nothing good comes easy or cheap.<\/p>\n

He further admonished Ghanaians not to do dirty politics with government initiatives because there are those who will be very vocal in their criticism but may not be able to perform when given that task while the person who could the job had been kicked out.<\/p>\n

Former President Kufuor also addressed the issue of accessing loans to develop a country saying anybody who kicks against a government going in for a loan is not being realistic or does not understand how a government runs.<\/p>\n

Several stakeholders have expressed concern about the increasing rate at which government is borrowing saying it could jeopardize the future of the next generations but the former President explains that productive loans which will yield gains are what a country goes in for and not ones for enjoyment adding that developed countries like America became what it is today through loans.<\/p>\n

He, however, stressed the need for accountability when loans are accessed so that the money would be used for the purpose for which it was contracted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He subtly hit out at his critics saying all the travelling he embarked on during his tenure of office, for which he was heavily lambasted was not for fun or sightseeing but was to help secure loans for developing the country.<\/p>\n

He mentioned the Bui Dam project, the Mallam-Yamoransa, Yamoransa \u2013Anwia-Nkwanta, Mallam-Tetteh Quarshie roads were all benefits that Ghana reaped from his travels.<\/p>\n

Former President Kufuor pledged to always champion the cause of Ghana wherever he finds himself because it is through Ghana that he has become great.<\/p>\n
