Maputo \u2014 The Mozambican police in Moamba district, about 70 kilometres north-west of Maputo, have arrested a member of an elite military unit, the Presidential Guard, and charged him with stock theft, reports Tuesday’s issue of the independent daily “O Pais”.<\/p>\n

The guardsman, Jeronimo Pinho Junior, was arrested together with his brother-in-law, a primary school teacher named Momad Tamele, and two unemployed men, Jossefa Mabassa and Salvador Tovela.<\/p>\n

The police say the four accused invaded a Moamba farm last Friday, and stole two head of cattle. For this purpose they used a Toyota pick-up truck, which has been seized and is now parked at the Moamba District Economic Activities Services.<\/p>\n

According to Moamba livestock farmers cited by “O Pais”, Pinho and Tamele were caught red-handed in possession of the two stolen animals at about 01.00 on Saturday morning, Tovela and Mabasso were arrested later in the day, and two other members of the gang are still at large.<\/p>\n

The Moamba farmers said they were shocked to discover that the man supposedly leading the gang of rustlers is a member of the military unit that guarantees the security of the President of the Republic.<\/p>\n

The Moamba Agricultural, Livestock and Industrial Association (ASSAPIMO) say that stock theft has increased dramatically and that over the past six months local farmers have lost over a hundred head of cattle.<\/p>\n

ASSAPIMO accuses the Moamba district police commander of collaborating with the thieves, and has urged the district administrator to have him replaced.<\/p>\n

One farmer says that when a court sentenced four thieves for stealing his cattle, the judge ordered that a vehicle seized from the criminals should be given to him in compensation for the stolen animals. But he told “O Pais” that this court sentence was never implemented – instead the district police commander kept the vehicle for himself.<\/p>\n
