At least 29 people, 20 of them Ugandans, were killed in an accident on Saturday in Southern Sudan. According to the Police, the gruesome accident also left 50 Ugandans, 16 southern Sudanese, two Kenyans and one Rwandan hospitalised with critical injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Most disturbing too is the fact that the horrifying accident involved two buses &#8211; one belonging to Baby Coaches and the other from Bakulu Cooaches &#8211; both Ugandan owned. The Baby Coaches bus, enroute to Juba from Kampala, and Bakulu Coaches bus that was coming from Juba, collided head-on, killing their respective drivers, among others, on the spot.<\/p>\n<p>In another depressing incident, three people were reportedly killed and two critically injured in a motor accident on Thursday evening in Jinja town. The Police said the accident was a result of a truck&#8217;s faulty breaking system, implying that the truck couldn&#8217;t brake.<\/p>\n<p>These motor accidents and many more that are common on Uganda&#8217;s roads today raise many questions, but who will provide the answers?<\/p>\n<p>True, motorists in Uganda, especially drivers and boda boda riders, are sometimes very reckless on the road. Some of them lack adequate driving and riding skills respectively and can only gamble on the road. There are also those who drive or ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs, not forgetting the sorry state of some of our roads. The sum total is that they put the lives of other road users, and theirs too, at great risk.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the most blame should go to the government, and by extension, the Police.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, speed governors, aimed at limiting the rate of accidents, due to speeding, were introduced. Vehicles, especially for public transport such as buses and taxis, were expected to install the garget. Police even enforced this regulation, but apparently, only for a while. What happened? What about the seatbelts? Are the police concerned any more that some vehicles have no seatbelts?<\/p>\n<p>The Police should wake up to the reality that a traffic regulation meant to safeguard people&#8217;s lives should be applied at all times and not only at the whims of an individual or institution.<\/p>\n<p>The Police should be pro-active in netting all vehicles in dangerous mechanical conditions that continue to ply our roads. They should also step up efforts to check drink-driving.
