Professor Kwamena Ahwoi has commended the media for contributing enormously to the development of the country, particularly the sustainability of the democratic dispensation in Ghana.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe media must be very circumspect and objective in their reportage, you must engage in constructive and objective criticisms in an open-minded perspective rather than lambasting policy-makers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Speaking at the opening of a three-day workshop organized by Media Foundation in Accra on Monday, Prof Kwamena Ahwoi observed that the media sometimes do not pay much attention to the operations and coverage of the local government system.<\/p>\n
He explained that the media forms part of the government and plays a critical role in the smooth operation of the governance system.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe media have the responsibility to make the local governance very meaningful, vibrant, attractive and accountable to the people at the grassroots level.\u201d This, he said, will improve and enhance the deepening of democracy at the district assembly level, adding that the media personnel become more relevant when they report issues that directly affect the people.<\/p>\n
He called on participants to be abreast with the operations of the local governance system. This, he said, will help in accessing the delivery of the constitutional duties of the District Assemblies.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou must organize constructive programs that figures out the real issues and problems on the ground, engage in open discussions with the district assembly so as to understand their operations\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe local government is equally not perfect as the central government,\u201d he said, entreating journalists to scrutinize and monitor the performance of the local government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
