Two-time Formula Two champion Jasmeet Chana registered his first supplementary class victory since moving to 4WD last year as the 2011 KCB Safari Rally ended on Sunday.

Jasmeet drove his Toyota Celica GT4 back in 3.21.43 hours, beating Subaru’s Alfir Khan by an eight minute margin. Third in supplementary class was Shazar Anwar, son of three-times Kenya champion Azar Anwar. “Leg 1B on Sunday was really tough. The stages were too long and the Bulls Eye stage in Kajiado was as scary as ever and lived up to its reputation as a car breaker. It gives me a better CV and by extension, an edge over my adversaries in Group “S” class, which I am still leading,” said Jasmeet.

Jasgit Singh, who lived in Kenya before relocating to Kampala cruised to victory in the 2WD category in a time of 2:12:18. Driving a VW Golf GTi and navigated by Kenyan Pinal Patel, Jasgit produced a spirited charge on Sunday to snatch the lead from Saturday’s surprise overnight leader Patrick Kibaara to win by a slender margin of 7 seconds.

Navigated by Nehreen Ismael, one of the only two ladies to finish in the 59th Safari Rally, Kibaara drove his rear-wheel drive Toyota Levin home in a time of 2:12:25 to bag his first ever podium finish. For Kibaara, the podium couldn’t have come at a more opportune time.

“I am really happy with our results. We lost an outright win by just 7 seconds but second overall place is good for us. This has boosted our morale and we are now looking forward to the rest of the season,” said Kibaara. The 2WD Drive class had its fair share of drama and anticipation.

Completing the podium trio in the 2WD was Niaz Bashir in a Toyota Celica. Niaz is fast growing into a formidable force after making two podium appearances in four outings. Partnering with Jonathan Kosgei, they posted a time 2 minutes 15 secs off the leader. Joe Muchiri finished fourth after encountering mechanical problems for the better part of his race but the Toyota Levin driver expressed his relief to have finished.

” Our gear box broke on Thursday morning as I was heading to KICC for scrutneering and I had to run like a maniac trying to get another box in time. I managed to sort that out but problems never stopped,” said Muchiri.
