{"id":445350,"date":"2011-06-21T22:50:41","date_gmt":"2011-06-21T22:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/21\/senate-approves-us-defence-chief\/"},"modified":"2011-06-21T22:50:41","modified_gmt":"2011-06-21T22:50:41","slug":"senate-approves-us-defence-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/21\/senate-approves-us-defence-chief\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate approves US defence chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"49.7747163695\"><span><span>21 June 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>18:50 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The US Senate has voted unanimously to approve the nomination of CIA chief Leon Panetta to succeed Robert Gates as US defence secretary.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers voted 100-0 in favour of Mr Panetta, 72, who was the head of the CIA during the operation that led to the killing of Osama Bin Laden.<\/p>\n<p>One of Mr Panetta&#8217;s first jobs will be to oversee the start of the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Gates is retiring on 30 June after close to five years in the position.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Panetta is expected to replace Mr Gates on 1 July, with General David Petraeus, the currently US commander in Afghanistan, taking over as CIA chief.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Panetta, a Democrat from California, served as chief of staff to President Bill Clinton between 1994 and 1997 and took over at the CIA in February 2009.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, President Barack Obama is to deliver his plans for the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>See more here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/world-us-canada-13869468\" title=\"Senate approves US defence chief\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senate approves US defence chief<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 21 June 2011 Last updated at 18:50 ET The US Senate has voted unanimously to approve the nomination of CIA chief Leon Panetta to succeed Robert Gates as US defence secretary.
