Kenya Prisons have named a team of over 60 athletes to represent the service during the national athletics championships next month at Nyayo Stadium. The team was named after the conclusion of the inter-provincial championships at the Nyayo over the weekend. Both seasoned and upcoming athletes fought hard to book slots in the national event, which also holds tickets to the August’s World athletics Championship in Daegu, South Korea.<\/p>\n

Top on the list was Commonwealth 1,500m champion Silas Kiplagat, who clocked 3:39.2 to win his specialty. He leads Fredrick Musyoki (3:40.0) and Dominic Mutuku (3:40.1) to the national showcase. Guest runner in the 10,000m, Kenneth Kipkemoi scored a brace and apart from gaining recruitment into the service, was named in the final team after an impressive run of 28:06.6. He was followed by Joseph Birech in 28:42.2 and Charles Cheruiyot (28:42.8).<\/p>\n

Veteran 400m runner Elizabeth Muthuka also made her comeback into the team after winning the 200m race and finishing second in the 400m. Muthuka is returning on the track after a two-year ban for testing positive to a banned substance in 2008.<\/p>\n

Muthuka clocked 24.9 in 200m race ahead of Damaris Imbogo (25.6) and Damaris Mbula (25.9). In the 400m race, Muthuka (56.4) was two seconds slower of Jelagat who timed 53.5 with Pamela Ceuno claiming the third slot in 58.4.<\/p>\n

Another veteran Catherine Ndereba made the cut in the 5,000m despite finding the going tough against upcoming athletes. She finished third timed at 16:48.8 in the race won by Jane Mwikali (16:28.4). Alice Mogire clocked 16:36.6 to finish second. However, the two-time Olympic silver medallist said her main focus is to make the marathon team to represent the country at the World Championships in Daegu later this year.<\/p>\n
