BENIN\u2014Leadership of Edo State House of Assembly, yesterday, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to probe the tenure of Mrs Farida Waziri, former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.<\/p>\n

They alleged that the war against corruption was highly politicised during her tenure and that unless a probe panel is set up, Nigerians would not be able to know why the fight against corruption, which was highly commended by the international community during the tenure of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, was whittled down.<\/p>\n

The call was made, yesterday, by Majority Leader of the House, Mr. Philip Shuaibu and Deputy Speaker, Mr. Festus Ebea.<\/p>\n

Shuaibu said: \u201cI want to salute Mr. President for removing Waziri. He did a similar thing with Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, when he removed Iwu and brought Prof. Jega. He has done it again in EFCC and we salute him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President must ensure that the EFCC is reformed. Mr. President should set up a probe panel to investigate Waziri\u2019s tenure as EFCC boss. I want to tell Lamorde to work on the good side he learnt while Ribadu was there and correct the negative aspect of Waziri\u2019s tenure so that Nigerians and the international community will see EFCC as a tool to fighting corruption. If that is done Nigeria will be a better place.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso, EFCC should widen their scope; they should not only be investigating local governments and governors alone. What happens to ministers or presidents? If you look at the entire budget of Nigeria, 26 per cent is from the state. So if 26 per cent is corrupt what happens to the 52 per cent allocation controlled by the Federal Government?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ebea said: \u201cI am equally calling on Mr. President to set up a panel of inquiry to investigate the activities of Farida Waziri throughout her tenure in EFCC. The panel should investigate her bank accounts, those of her family and children as well as relatives before, during and after she became EFCC boss.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am convinced that by her attitude to work as chairman of EFCC she aided and abetted corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
