Abuja \u2013 The Federal Government has reiterated its determination to address the problem of corruption to ensure the success of its\u00a0 transformation agenda and restore the good image of the country.<\/p>\n

Vice President Namadi Sambo made the reaffirmation\u00a0 at a dinner in Abuja on Thursday as part of the ceremony in honour of recipients
of the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) for 2010 and 2011.<\/p>\n

He described corruption in Nigeria as a cancer which had been frustrating government efforts toward improving the quality of life of the people.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0 said\u00a0 government would fight \u201cthis cancer\u201d to a standstill to ensure progress of the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want also to seize this opportunity to assure Nigerians that we will fight corruption very seriously. Corruption has been a cancer that has gone into the marrow of this country and Insha Allah we will address it and do away with it in this country.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

The vice-president said the Federal Government had also resolved to promote science and technical education at all levels of the education system.<\/p>\n

He said research and development was\u00a0 one of the government\u2019s key cardinal points under the transformation agenda.<\/p>\n

Sambo said the Federal Executive Council had approved the immediate establishment of five specialised universities to boost science and technical education.<\/p>\n

\u201cHuman capital development is one of the major cardinal points of this administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will recall that the Federal Executive Council has already decided that each state of the federation must have a specialised university and already five universities have been approved and they have taken off and by 2012 all outstanding states will have a federal university<\/p>\n

\u201c`We have directed the ministry of education to boost the development of science education and the improvement of science education in this country will be the major part of our policies.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Sambosaid\u00a0 some parts of the country had started witnessing stability in power supply and promised that the government would soon inject additional megawatts into the national grid.<\/p>\n

He said the government was investing heavily in the coal to power energy programme as part of a deliberate effort to boost electricity supply, adding that\u00a0 already Enugu, Benue, Kogi and Gombe states had
been selected for the commencement of phase one of the Coal Power Plant project.<\/p>\n

Sambo said that the government had embarked on the construction of more than 3,000km of dual carriage ways
across the country.<\/p>\n

He congratulated the recipients and urged them to continue their good works for the
progress of humanity.<\/p>\n

In his remark, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. Ayim Pius Ayim, expressed appreciation to President Goodluck Jonathan for increasing the monetary reward for winners of the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) by 100 per cent.<\/p>\n

The Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian National Merit Award, Prof. Ouwafeyisola Adegoke, said the board had resolved to continue to perform its responsibilities diligently. (NAN)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
