Tottenham<\/a> legend Gary Mabbutt believes the club should sell wantaway midfielder Luka Modric<\/a> and use the money to strengthen the squad.<\/p>\n

Spurs have knocked back an approach from Chelsea for the Croatian, with chairman Daniel Levy insisting the player will not be sold in a frank club statement.<\/p>\n

Modric has indicated he would welcome a move to Stamford Bridge though, and former Spurs defender Mabbutt does not think keeping hold of a player who wants to leave will benefit the club.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way that last season went and the way the team performed in the Champions League it attracted a lot of attention to the club and the players globally,” Mabbutt told talkSPORT<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe main thing is that missing out on the top four last year the players got a taste of Champions League football and when you\u2019re getting big offers coming in with the opportunity of playing in the Champions League and there is always a risk of this happening.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a surprise, we all knew it was going to happen. We just hoped we could hold on to the players for another season at least and get back into the top four.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to look to the future, if he wants to go there is no point holding back an unhappy player, you\u2019ve got to use that money and build.\u201d<\/p>\n
