{"id":443762,"date":"2011-06-19T05:20:37","date_gmt":"2011-06-19T05:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/19\/moroccan-cities-set-for-protests\/"},"modified":"2011-06-19T05:20:37","modified_gmt":"2011-06-19T05:20:37","slug":"moroccan-cities-set-for-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/19\/moroccan-cities-set-for-protests\/","title":{"rendered":"Moroccan cities set for protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"60.2729371033\"><span><span>19 June 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>01:20 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Demonstrations are expected later in Moroccan cities after reformists said constitutional changes proposed by King Mohammed VI do not go far enough.<\/p>\n<p>Many critics want constitutional changes drawn up by a democratically elected committee instead.<\/p>\n<p>They also say the proposed referendum on the constitution comes too soon and leaves little time for a real debate.<\/p>\n<p>The king said on Friday the reforms would limit his power and usher Morocco towards a constitutional monarchy.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed measures include giving the prime minister and parliament more executive authority and recognising the minority Berber language.<\/p>\n<p>But King Mohammed would keep key powers and remain head of the army.<\/p>\n<p>The king&#8217;s proposals will be put to a referendum on 1 July, but many activists said Morocco&#8217;s 400-year-old monarchy has a long history of enacting superficial reforms.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the February 20 reformist movement plan protests on Sunday calling for greater changes to the country&#8217;s political system.<\/p>\n<p>Like many countries across the Middle East and North Africa, Morocco has seen a growing call for major reforms to its political system in the past year.<\/p>\n<p>The country has also been facing severe economic challenges with high unemployment and rising levels of poverty.<\/p>\n<p>King Mohammed, 47, acceded to the throne in 1999 following the death of his father, Hassan II, and now heads the Arab world&#8217;s longest-serving dynasty.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>More here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/world-africa-13827502\" title=\"Moroccan cities set for protests\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moroccan cities set for protests<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 19 June 2011 Last updated at 01:20 ET Demonstrations are expected later in Moroccan cities after reformists said constitutional changes proposed by King Mohammed VI do not go far enough.
