{"id":443742,"date":"2011-06-18T23:30:08","date_gmt":"2011-06-18T23:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/18\/new-cabinet-politicians-lose-out-in-first-list\/"},"modified":"2011-06-18T23:30:08","modified_gmt":"2011-06-18T23:30:08","slug":"new-cabinet-politicians-lose-out-in-first-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/18\/new-cabinet-politicians-lose-out-in-first-list\/","title":{"rendered":"New cabinet: Politicians lose out in first list"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"87\">\n<p>*11 nominees cleared, 20\u00a0 others\u00a0 for fresh screening<\/p>\n<p><strong>By JIDE AJANI<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amid indications that the State Security\u00a0 Service (SSS) may have cleared eleven ministerial nominees sent to it by the Presidency for security screening, there are feelers that the nominees are dominated by technocrats.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Sunday Vanguard learnt that a fresh list of 20 ministerial nominees was sent to the\u00a0 SSS for screening at the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Presidency sources said another list may be sent for screening this week.<\/p>\n<p>To signpost that technocrats may dominate the\u00a0 federal\u00a0 cabinet as against politicians, the sources said one of\u00a0 the eleven nominees already cleared is a distinguished professional and is being tipped to man the agriculture\u00a0 ministry.<br \/>\u2018\u2019 The nominee\u00a0 is reputed to be one of the best in agriculture in Africa\u2019\u2019, one of the sources said.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a silent war between technocrats and politicians on who should populate the government of President Goodluck Jonathan.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for this is the argument by politicians that they were the ones who worked for the electoral victory of the president and not technocrats who stood idly bye during the elections.<\/p>\n<p>Although some names were being bandied\u00a0 last week as having scaled security clearance, Sunday Vanguard can reveal that, contrary to those reports, some of those names are yet to appear on any list.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0 was learnt that \u201cwhereas there is intense lobbying going on, the president and commander-in-chief is determined to ensure that those to be appointed ministers this time around would be those who can\u00a0 make the difference with a view to moving Nigeria forward\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A source\u00a0 said \u201cthere are indications that President Goodluck Jonathan would still send more names for screening.\u00a0 Mr. President would still send more names, that much I can tell you\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The indication to this effect, Sunday Vanguard can proffer, is based on the constitutional provision which states that each state of the federation should be represented in the Executive Council of the Federation, EXCOF.<br \/>The 11 cleared nominees and the freshly delivered list of 20 give a total of 31 nominees.<\/p>\n<p>There are 36 states in Nigeria; therefore, names from five more states would still need to be sent for security clearance.<\/p>\n<p>Aso Rock Presidential Villa has reportedly since received the names of those who have already succeeded in the security clearance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Comments are moderated.
