{"id":443690,"date":"2011-06-18T19:42:46","date_gmt":"2011-06-18T19:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/18\/obama-and-boehner-in-golf-summit\/"},"modified":"2011-06-18T19:42:46","modified_gmt":"2011-06-18T19:42:46","slug":"obama-and-boehner-in-golf-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/18\/obama-and-boehner-in-golf-summit\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama and Boehner in golf summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"104.1295\"><span><span>18 June 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>15:42 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US President Barack Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner have played a golfing head-to-head, with federal budget discussion likely to have taken place between the shots.<\/p>\n<p>The political rivals played at the Andrews military base in Maryland, along with Vice President Joe Biden and Ohio&#8217;s Republican Governor John Kasich.<\/p>\n<p>The game was touted as an opportunity to socialise and discuss the budget.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans want spending cuts with the deficit poised to hit $1.4tr (\u00a3865bn).<\/p>\n<p>The group also teed off amid a dispute between the White House and Congress over the legality of the US role in the Nato-led mission in Libya.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Mr Boehner told the White House the ongoing US support for Nato&#8217;s mission in Libya violated a US war powers law limiting military action without congressional approval to 60 days.<\/p>\n<p>The White House on Thursday responded with a letter to Congress insisting Mr Obama did not need congressional approval, because the military campaign was limited in scope.<\/p>\n<p>And late on Friday, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/18\/world\/africa\/18powers.html?hp\">the New York Times reported<\/a> Mr Obama had overruled the advice of two senior administration lawyers in taking that position.
