When Roman Abramovich took over as club owner, he had two goals – one – to turn the Blues into a well-regarded global brand – and two – to make his clubs model more sustainable so that his billions were not required to keep the team afloat.

Having succeeded in achieving his first target, the Russian owner brought in the well-connected Arnesen to scour the planet for inexpensive, young talents and develop a quality youth system. In neither case did the Dane succeed: the only youths he signed who have had any significant first-team playing time are Salomon Kalou and John Obi Mikel, and no recent Chelsea academy graduates have managed more than a handful of appearances.

Instead, the Blues effectively admitted their failure to revamp their youth program by bringing in a new crop of stars. In light of the decline of Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and John Terry, Arnesen’s Chelsea spent some €83.5 million £73.7m on Fernando Torres and David Luiz during the recent winter transfer window.

Arnesen, who announced his resignation in November but remained at Chelsea until recently, has joined Hamburg and created quite a splash. Curiously, in Germany he is regarded as the perfect man for the job as sporting director as the Rothosen look to bring youth to their ageing team. And to his credit, he has trimmed off the old and brought in the young. Starters Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Ze Roberto, Joris Mathijsen, and Frank Rost, all 31 or more years of age, have left. In place of the aging contingent, HSV have signed Chelsea reserves Jacopo Sala and Gokhan Tore, as well as formerly Blues-contracted defender Michael Mancienne, who has spent the last three years on loan at Wolves. Youngster Jeffrey Bruma, as well, is soon expected to move to Germany on a two-year loan.

The question now is whether Arnesen’s signings will have any positive impact on Hamburg in the near future, and this is still very much in question. Sala and Tore are particularly head-scratching acquisitions because HSV had no shortage of young, talented attacking players before they arrived. Anis Ben-Hatira, Tunay Torun, and Son Heung-Min all have shown potential, and HSV also have more established international footballers including Eljero Elia and Marcell Jansen. The newcomers will have more opportunities to showcase their skills in the youth-friendly Bundesliga, but they will have no shortage of competition.

THE NEW FACE OF HAMBURG?

Sala

Mancienne

Bruma

At the back, it is true that a central player was a necessary addition following the departure of Mathijsen, but Mancienne’s signing does raise questions. The 23-year-old comes from what has been one of England’s worst defences over the last two years, and will undoubtedly need time to adapt to the Bundesliga’s defensive culture. That said, the England U-21 captain has spent his first two appearances in the U-21 European Championships as a deep-lying midfielder; arguably the perfect preparation for a league in which centre-backs are required to offer a little more subtlety and willingness to get the ball down and play than is the case in the Premier League.

Assuming his signing goes ahead, Bruma may need to adapt as well, but a bigger concern for HSV is the role that he will play. Should he come on loan, the Dutchman is at best a short-term solution to Hamburg’s central defensive problem.

The Hamburg faithful may be rejoicing over Arnesen’s arrival, but for now their celebrations are premature. The Dane has apparently abandoned the widespread German model of promoting academy graduates, and his signings are suspect, especially given his poor record of finding young stars while at Stamford Bridge. HSV’s problems in recent years have been more the result of poor coaching than inadequacies in the squad, casting further doubt on the utility of his additions.

With all that having been said, Arnesen’s record before Chelsea cannot be ignored. He did discover Ronaldo, Jaap Stam, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Arjen Robben, and brought them all to PSV during his tenure at the Dutch side. Based on its cultural emphasis on athleticism, the Premier League is not a place for young, physically immature players to flourish, and perhaps Abramovich’s dream was one that Arnesen could never fulfill. Even so, the Dane has a lot to prove; for the time being, Hamburg fans would be wise to keep their champagne corked.

Follow Clark Whitney on

View post:
Frank Arnesen failed at Chelsea –
