Owen Coyle was enthusiastic about the prospect of facing five of last year’s top-six clubs at the beginning of the new season.

The Trotters face Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City, as well as Liverpool, QPR and Norwich, in their opening seven fixtures as they look to try and improve on last year’s 14th-placed finish.

But Coyle was far from pessimistic at the thought of facing the best clubs in the Premier League.

“We’re in the best league in the world because of the quality it holds, and we all have the same 38 fixtures home and away,” he told Sky Sports News.

“We play five of the top six in our first seven games but they’re fantastic games for Bolton Wanderers.

“We’ve shown that we can go toe-to-toe with the best teams and that’s what we’ll have to do.

“We have to do it early in the season to get ourselves up and running and we’re looking forward to it.”

Coyle also refused to take the prospect of facing newly promoted QPR lightly, as they will be buoyed by their promotion to the top-flight under Neil Warnock.

He added: “They’re very difficult, there’s no doubt about it. QPR will be on a high after their terrific Championship success, but it’s a great game to look forward to.

“Neil Warnock’s a terrific manager, it’s a great club, so yeah, it’s a tough fixture.

When asked about how many points would be needed to survive in the Premier League, after Birmingham went down on 39 points last season, Coyle said it was far too early to be trying to make predictions.

“I think it’d be folly to look too far ahead and try to pinpoint targets and points from various matches,” he said.

“The nature of the Premier League – you know that every game’s a tough game. It’s the best league in the world because of the quality and the coverage it’s given.

“The fans will be excited and we have to do our very best. From my perspective as a manager, we have to look to improve the football club every year. We’ve done that to this point and we have to do that again next season.”
