\u00a0Two of Nigeria\u2019s most prominent writers, Prof. Chinua Achebe and Prof. Wole Soyinka, have made the Guardian of London\u2019s list of the 100 greatest non-fiction writers.<\/p>\n

Achebe\u2019s selected memoir,\u00a0 An Image of Africa, criticised\u00a0 Joseph Conrad for portraying African characters as savages, incapable of intelligent speech.\u00a0 As Achebe says, \u201cHeart of Darkness projects the image of Africa as \u201cthe other world,\u201d the antithesis of Europe and therefore of civilization, a place where man\u2019s vaunted intelligence and refinement are finally mocked by triumphant bestiality.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0Published in 1975,\u00a0 Achebe challenges western cultural imperialism in his argument that Heart of Darkness was a racist novel, which deprives its African characters of humanity, the paper said.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 The Man Died , written by Soyinka in 1971, selected under the category, Memoir,\u00a0 is a powerful autobiographical account of Soyinka\u2019s experiences in prison during the Nigerian civil war.\u00a0 At that time, Soyinka had campaigned for a peaceful settlement of the crisis between the Biafran and Nigerian side; an idea that didn\u2019t go down well with the Gowon administration.<\/p>\n

He was arrested and put in solitary confinement for 22 months for his efforts. Being in prison didn\u2019t deter Soyinka from writing poems on tissue papers, which were later published in a collection titled Poems from Prison.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
