{"id":442723,"date":"2011-06-17T05:11:54","date_gmt":"2011-06-17T05:11:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/17\/ghana-take-urban-poverty-reduction-serious-sif\/"},"modified":"2011-06-17T05:11:54","modified_gmt":"2011-06-17T05:11:54","slug":"ghana-take-urban-poverty-reduction-serious-sif","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/17\/ghana-take-urban-poverty-reduction-serious-sif\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana: Take Urban Poverty Reduction Serious -SIF"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"64.3719391132\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghanaian-chronicle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/ghanachronicle180.jpg\" alt=\"Ghanaian Chronicle (Accra)\" title=\"Visit Ghanaian Chronicle (Accra)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Samuel Agbewode<\/p>\n<p>16 June 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>The Acting Ho Zonal Officer of the Social Investment Fund (SIF), Mr. Justice Akuffo-Henaku, has called on Ghanaians to take the Urban Poverty Reduction Programme (UPRP) more seriously, to assist the poor and vulnerable in society, who should be seen as a constant reminder of the under-developed status of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Akuffo-Henaku stressed that the poor in the society, whose potentials have been marginalised, and were looked on as a drawback to society, had not had much done for them, in terms of social protection measures to integrate them into the socio-economic march in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Acting Zonal Officer, who was speaking at the launch of the Social Inclusion Transfer Programme, said the Urban Poverty Reduction Programme was providing financial support to the extremely poor in the Ho Municipality, as part of the government&#8217;s efforts at helping to improve the living standards of the people, particularly, the very poor in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Akuffo-Henaku explained that the total number of beneficiaries under the programme in the Ho Municipality was 248, including 148 females and 106 males, were critically chosen through the work of a committee and assembly members, who helped in the selection process of the very poor in the Municipality.<\/p>\n<p>He said a total of 29 communities and four Zonal Councils were targeted, which included pregnant women, people living with HIV|AIDS, lactating mothers, and physically challenged persons, noting that one child would be entitled to between 60 and GH \u00c2\u00a2110 every three months.<\/p>\n<p>The Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Isaac Kodobisah, who launched the programme, gave out identification cards to the beneficiaries to enable them access the money regularly.<\/p>\n<p>He further admitted that even though such assistance would not address all the problems of the beneficiaries, it would help address their crucial needs.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Kodobisah stressed the need for the beneficiaries to use the resources effectively to enhance their living standards, adding that the Assembly would play an oversight responsibility to ensure the judicious use of the monies, through regular monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>He continued that the efforts being made by the government to ensure that the country had a strong economy could only be possible when the lives of the very poor had been enhanced, that was why the government had put in place measures that would ensure that it did not leave them behind in the development process.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Kodobisah assured the people in the Municipality that much was being done to reduce poverty among the people, as well as provide the needed infrastructure that were relevant to the development of the people, especially, educational infrastructure and other social interventions.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<fieldset>\n<legend align=\"center\"><strong>More News on allAfrica.com<\/strong><\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<p>AllAfrica &#8211; All the Time<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Originally posted here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201106170082.html\" title=\"Ghana: Take Urban Poverty Reduction Serious -SIF\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ghana: Take Urban Poverty Reduction Serious -SIF<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Samuel Agbewode 16 June 2011 The Acting Ho Zonal Officer of the Social Investment Fund (SIF), Mr. Justice Akuffo-Henaku, has called on Ghanaians to take the Urban Poverty Reduction Programme (UPRP) more seriously, to assist the poor and vulnerable in society, who should be seen as a constant reminder of the under-developed status of the country.
