She then outlined the measures her administration has taken, under each pillar, towards the country’s recovery and reconstruction.

The President told the Diaspora audience that the upcoming elections would be “a defining event” for the country. “Let’s all make sure that we work together, that we pray, we hope for a peaceful elections, and that the people’s will, whatever that will is, be done. I want to assure you that if that happens, Liberia moves to a much better level and we can then safely say that we’re on the path to achieve our new vision, to make Liberia a middle-income country by the year 2030” – a society where every Liberian would have a stake in the society, and have say in how the country’s natural resources would be used for the benefit of all.

In the exchange with the audience, the President responded to questions on such issues as the Nimba land dispute, Liberia assuming responsibility for its own security post-UNMIL, and Liberian participation at the upcoming UK-Liberia Investment Forum.

To the request concerning the processing of Liberian passports, the President informed the audience that the necessary equipment for doing so was being installed in Washington, D.C., and that London would be next.

Introducing the President was Liberia’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, H.E. Wesley Johnson.

Speaking earlier, the president of the Union of Liberia Organizations in the United Kingdom (ULO-UK), Prince Taylor, said President Sirleaf’s presence was a clear manifestation of her commitment to serving the Liberian people. He acknowledged her tireless efforts in rebuilding Liberia, and for again restoring Liberians’ pride and dignity. Referring to the upheavals over twenty years, he said the President had made vast improvements, but added that more needed to be done, in education, health, security and corruption.

The ULO-UK chairperson called upon the President to treat, with priority, the issues of dual citizenship; that the Government empower the Embassy in London to process passports for Liberians; and to request the British Government to establish an embassy near Monrovia to facilitate smooth travel arrangements and strengthen bilateral ties. He thanked the President for her accomplishments thus far, and wished her success in the elections.

ULO-UK presented President Sirleaf with a crystal “Winners Award”, in recognition of her leadership, dedication, inspiration and hope, over the years, to Liberians at home and abroad. The President was also presented a bouquet by Miss Liberia UK 2010, Delrose Afolabe.

Welcoming President Sirleaf back to King’s College was its Principal and President, Sir Richard Trainor. He said it was a great pleasure to have the President in that institution of higher learning because she represented, among many other positive things, the power of education, to enable someone of ability to make her mark on the world. It was particularly appropriate to have the Town Hall Meeting at King’s, he said, because Africa, in general, and Liberia, in particular, were very important to the College because a very important part of its academic endeavor, and outreach to the world, was its African Leadership Centre. Also speaking on behalf of King’s College was Dr. Fumi Olanilasi.

Other participants in the event included: Mrs. Jehunita Matthews-Freeman, who introduced the program; Miss Philomena Simpson, who sang for the President; and Mrs. Lena Marshall.

The President is in London to participate in the GAVI Alliance Pledging Conference on Immunisation; deliver an address, at Chatham House (the Royal Institute of International Affairs), on “The Challenges of Postwar Reconstruction – the Liberian Experience”; and attend the UK-Liberia Investment Forum dinner.

Among officials attending the event were: Foreign Minister Dr. Toga G. McIntosh; Lands & Mines Minister Dr. Roosevelt Jayjay; Grand Gedeh Representative Hon. Zoe Pennue; Liberia’s Ambassadors to Germany and Egypt, H.E. Ethel Davis and H.E. Alexander Wallace, respectively; Senior Advisor to the President, Robert Sirleaf; and other Ministry of State personnel.

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica – All the Time

See more here:
‘Your Country Is in Good Shape’

15 June 2011 Over 200 Liberians living in the United Kingdom and elsewhere gave President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf an enthusiastic and warm welcome upon her arrival in London on Sunday, June 12th, as she participated in a Town Hall Meeting of Diaspora Liberians, held at King’s College, Guy’s Campus.
