CRS is one of the principal recipients of the Global Fund Round 9 Grants responsible for behavioural change, communication and distribution of LLINs in The Gambia. Under the Round 9 Grants, CRS distributes LLINs to children less than one year and pregnant women through reproduction and child health clinics.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Fatim Badjie, the minister of Health and Social Welfare described malaria as one of the most formidable public health problems that confront Gambians. She however, assured that the health Ministry has also undergone corresponding transformation to meet such challenges. The Health minister said that government has accorded high priority to malaria cases and other diseases of public health significance, pointing out that since the launching of Operation Eradicate Malaria, and the subsequent implementation of Indoor Residual Spraying, the fight against malaria has been relentless and sustained.

She added: “Guided by the vision, which is consistent with millennium development goals declared by world leaders, we have intensified our efforts as a government, to strengthen collaboration with our development partners in mobilising the requisite resources to contain malaria.” Minister Badjie commended the significant support and contribution of all partners, notably WHO, UNDP, CRS, NGOs, and the Global Fund to Fight Against AIDs, TB, and Malaria. She expressed confidence that before 2015, The Gambia will reach and even possibly surpass all the pre-elimination and control targets for all diseases, including malaria.

Regarding the preparation of the re-distribution campaign, Minister Badjie urged all the beneficiaries to make the best use of the nets by sleeping under it, saying the nets have proven to be useful to prevent contact with mosquitoes that transmit the malaria parasite. She disclosed that in 2007, The Gambia had the highest record of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) used by children under five and pregnant women in the whole of Africa. She then stressed that the fight against malaria cannot be won by working in isolation as a member of a specific organisation, or by working together as members of a loose amalgamation.

Momodou Saidy, the State House Press officer, said the donation would remind the gathering about the importance the government of The Gambia attaches to the development of the health sector. He said: “A Few months ago, we witnessed the distribution of over 700, 000 thousands ITNs to the large population with the objective of eradicating the incidence of malaria from the general population, more especially from children under five and pregnant women. The programme is a key component of the Gambia government.”

He revealed that in 1993, the infant mortality rate in The Gambia stood at 85 per 1000 lives, but at the moment, it is 61 per 1000. He added: “Despite all this impressive figures, malaria and diarrhea continue to pose challenges for the health sector. The health sector remains a key priority area for the government calendar for social and economic advancement. We must remember that an unhealthy nation is not a wealthy nation.”

Ebrima Jarjou, the CRS head of programmes recalled that in April-March, they distributed about 700, 000 nets across the country which targeted the whole population, but unfortunately not all single members of the population have been reached. “We want to continue with the crusade to provide nets to communities through community distribution points. We will also continue to provide nets to MCH Clinics which are now called reproductive and child health facilities to make sure that children under one year and pregnant women continue to receive nets,” he concluded.

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica – All the Time

Continue Reading:
CRS Gives Out Over 20, 000 Mosquito Nets

The Daily Observer (Banjul) Omar Wally 15 June 2011 The Catholic Relief Service (CRS) in collaboration with Heath Promotion and Development Organisation (HePDO) Tuesday donated over 20, 000 long-lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLINs) to communities and institutions across the country.
