{"id":442290,"date":"2011-06-16T11:29:40","date_gmt":"2011-06-16T11:29:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/16\/nigeria-ncaa-boss-indentifies-roadmap-for-survival-of-domestic-airlines\/"},"modified":"2011-06-16T11:29:40","modified_gmt":"2011-06-16T11:29:40","slug":"nigeria-ncaa-boss-indentifies-roadmap-for-survival-of-domestic-airlines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/16\/nigeria-ncaa-boss-indentifies-roadmap-for-survival-of-domestic-airlines\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria: NCAA Boss Indentifies Roadmap for Survival of Domestic Airlines"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"79.2123718756\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.champion.com.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/dailychampion180.jpg\" alt=\"Daily Champion (Lagos)\" title=\"Visit Daily Champion (Lagos)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>16 June 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has urged the federal government to put in place enabling policies that would sustain indigenous airlines, which are currently struggling to survive escalating costs of aviation fuel, offshore maintenance of the aircraft as well as reduction in the double digit interest rates charged by commercial banks.<\/p>\n<p>NCAA DG, Dr. Harold Demuren, also sought the local refining of aviation fuel (Jet A1) stating that if it is done it would aid in reducing airlines&#8217; operating costs<\/p>\n<p>He said if this done, it would enable the Nigerian carriers to make profit, as operating costs gulp their income.<\/p>\n<p>Demuren, who spoke while declaring open, a customer service workshop for Arik Air personnel, identified the huge cost of doing aviation business in Nigeria as one of the reasons why many domestic carriers has been having difficulty getting capacity passenger in most of their flights inspite of the fact that they have acquired modern aircraft and an excellent crew.<\/p>\n<p>The chief regulator explained that government has a critical role to play by providing intervention funds, from where the airlines could access funds to boost their operations.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the fluctuating exchange rate has not helped matters as airlines have to pay more naira for the dollar denominated charges, a development he said continues to put a huge gap in the pockets of the airlines.<\/p>\n<p>The NCAA helmsman said if nothing is done to bring down the operating costs for domestic airlines, after paying fuel and the cost of aircraft maintenance the carriers may have no funds to attend to other segment of their operations.<\/p>\n<p>He said apart from improvement on the delivery of services by airlines, NCAA was working out framework that could make operators liable for service failures, even as he affirmed that airlines were not the only parties responsible for factors that contribute to either flight delays or cancellation.<\/p>\n<p>He urged aviation agencies to improve on both airport and air navigation facilities that will facilitate on time departure of aircraft to its destination.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;All domestic airline must work hard to improve their service delivery, else it will be difficult to attract passengers to fly them as carriers of choice. It is for this reason that we at the NCAA are working on a framework that would enable us hold airlines responsible for their actions.
