{"id":442119,"date":"2011-06-16T07:12:58","date_gmt":"2011-06-16T07:12:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/16\/zawahiri-becomes-al-qaeda-chief\/"},"modified":"2011-06-16T07:12:58","modified_gmt":"2011-06-16T07:12:58","slug":"zawahiri-becomes-al-qaeda-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/16\/zawahiri-becomes-al-qaeda-chief\/","title":{"rendered":"Zawahiri &#8216;becomes al-Qaeda chief&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"50.7721712538\"><span><span>16 June 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>03:12 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Al-Qaeda has appointed Ayman al-Zawahiri as leader following the death of Osama Bin Laden, the organisation&#8217;s general command says in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Bin Laden was killed by US forces in Pakistan in early May.<\/p>\n<p>In the statement, al-Qaeda &#8220;announces that Sheikh Dr Ayman al-Zawahiri, may God guide him, assumed responsibility as the group&#8217;s amir [leader]&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It warned it would continue to fight a jihad or holy war against the US and Israel under his direction.<\/p>\n<p>Zawahiri is believed by some experts to have been the &#8220;operational brains&#8221; behind the 9\/11 attacks on the US.<\/p>\n<p>He was Bin Laden&#8217;s deputy for years and warned just over a week ago that Bin Laden would continue to &#8220;terrify&#8221; the US from beyond the grave.<\/p>\n<p>For years security analysts have suggested Zawahiri is most likely to be hiding in the Afghan-Pakistan border region.<\/p>\n<p>However, Bin Laden and other key militant leaders who were also believed to be concealed there have instead been discovered in Pakistani towns and cities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Read the original post:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/world-middle-east-13788594\" title=\"Zawahiri 'becomes al-Qaeda chief'\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zawahiri &#8216;becomes al-Qaeda chief&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 16 June 2011 Last updated at 03:12 ET Al-Qaeda has appointed Ayman al-Zawahiri as leader following the death of Osama Bin Laden, the organisation&#8217;s general command says in a statement.
