{"id":441950,"date":"2011-06-16T00:45:16","date_gmt":"2011-06-16T00:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/16\/teachers-protest-over-appointment-letters\/"},"modified":"2011-06-16T00:45:16","modified_gmt":"2011-06-16T00:45:16","slug":"teachers-protest-over-appointment-letters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/16\/teachers-protest-over-appointment-letters\/","title":{"rendered":"Teachers protest over appointment letters"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"78\">\n<p>BY Olasunkanmi Akoni &#038; Monsur Olowoopejo<br \/>LAGOS \u2014 The 507 science graduates recently recruited by Lagos State government for teaching job, yesterday, stormed the office of Governor Babatunde Fashola of the state in Alausa, Ikeja, to protest\u00a0\u00a0 non-issuance of appointment letters by the state government.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has commenced training for 300 street sweeper supervisors in which 18 outstanding candidates would be sponsored to a two-week exchange programme in United Kingdom for further intensive training on litter control and city cleaning practices aimed at realising the vision of making Lagos the cleanest city in Africa by 2012.<\/p>\n<p>On the protest at Alausa, it will be recalled that the fresh graduate teachers were employed about three months ago as part of government\u2019s effort to improve educational standard, especially in sciences and the reduce unemployment rate among graduates in the state.<\/p>\n<p>They were employed under the state\u2019s Special Education Intervention Programme to particularly prepare final year public school pupils for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WAEC, with the promise of getting automatic employment.<\/p>\n<p>The science graduates at a peaceful demonstration, accused government of taking advantage of their plights to use and dump them helplessly after the April general elections. The governor was, however, not available to receive the protesters as he was currently on an official mission abroad.<\/p>\n<p>According to the protesting teachers, three months after the completion of the intensive teaching exercise, they had been rendered abandoned as the officials at the state Ministry of Education kept giving excuses and tossing them around the secretariat.<\/p>\n<p>One of the graduates, who identified himself as Francis retorted; \u201cthe Ministry of Education has directed us to the governor\u2019s office. Officials at the ministry said that the issue of employment is beyond their power and that we should find out from the office of the governor which is directly involved in the recruitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Comments are moderated.
