ABUJA\u2014THE National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has released to each family of the 10 slain corps members their gratuities which it increased from N100,000 to one N1 million.<\/p>\n

This came on a day the NYSC also announced that Bauchi State government had fulfilled its N2 million pledge to each of the families of the deceased corps members. Recall that the corps members were killed during the post-election violence that rocked some states in the north, including Bauchi.<\/p>\n

NYSC Director-General, Brig-General Maharazu Tsiga, in a statement issued yesterday by the Mr. Samson Agboko for Director (PR), said the deceased corps members were the first beneficiaries of the increase in gratuity from N100,000 to N1 million.<\/p>\n

Tsiga said the drafts from Bauchi State government already drawn in the names of the next-of-kin of each of the deceased corps members had been released to the families.<\/p>\n

He commended the commitment of the deceased corps members to the successes of the 2011 general election and assured the families that Federal Government was determined to fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act for appropriate punishment to deter others.<\/p>\n

He said the token from Bauchi State government was a way of sharing in the grief of the bereaved families, and expressed condolences of the government and people of that state over the irreparable loss of the gallant patriots.<\/p>\n

The NYSC boss said: \u201cWith pride, determination and sense of duty, they reported to assigned polling units where they diligently and successfully conducted the parliamentary and presidential elections adjudged as credible by both the domestic and international observers, signposting a quantum leap from our previous troubling experiences.<\/p>\n

\u201cApart from the N2 million draft, the Bauchi State government offered some other incentives which include sponsorship of three persons per family to either Jerusalem or Mecca on holy pilgrimage, and scholarship to two persons from each family of the deceased up to university level.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso documents for the pilgrimage and nomination forms for the scholarship were handed to the families.\u201d
Responding on behalf of the affected families, Mr. Anwuchien N. Nkpokiri thanked the NYSC for its continuous demonstration of sympathy and support to them since the loss of the corps members.<\/p>\n

\u201cThough we are their biological parents, you have clearly demonstrated to us that they were your children as well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Okpokiri also thanked the Bauchi State government for fulfilling its pledge concerning compensation to the families.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
