Unlike in the other regions, the Former First Lady and Presidential Aspirant of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings surprisingly received a very warm reception from the Northern Regional Executives of the party on Friday, when her campaign train hit the region.<\/p>\n
Even though the Regional Executives and some constituencies came out publicly to declare their support for President John Evans Atta Mills, they respectfully responded to the invitation of the Former First Lady, and pledged to create the necessary atmosphere for her to carry out her campaign across the region. Among those present was the Regional Chairman, Awudu Sofo Azorka.<\/p>\n
Speaking to The Chronicle after a close door meeting with the executives in Tamale, the Regional Secretary, Alhaji Yussif Imoro Umar said the regional executives fully recognized Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings as one of the key figures in the NDC and her intention to lead the party, in their bid to entrench democracy in the NDC.<\/p>\n
According to him, the Regional Executives respect the constitution of the party and regulations set aside by the National Executives to regulate the Presidential campaign and would, therefore, not do anything that contravene rules.<\/p>\n
He noted that following the directives of the National Executives, the regional officers had warned all the Constituency Executives not to do anything that would frustrate the campaign of the candidates.<\/p>\n
Alhaji Umar noted that before the arrival of the First Lady, the executives had already instructed the constituencies to give her the necessary support and co-operation.\u00a0The Chronicle’s attempt to speak with Nana Konadu after the meeting with the Regional executives was not successful, but the Regional Secretary, Alhaji Umar hinted she expressed disappointment about the raging tension and division in the NDC.<\/p>\n
The Former First Lady was reported to have asked all members of Get Atta Mills Endorsed (GAME) and the Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings (FONKAR) to avoid the campaign of insults and see themselves as people from one political party.<\/p>\n
She also said that the July Congress in Sunyani was not a do or die affair, but a contest between people from one party and that the interest of the NDC ought to be rather upheld over individual interest.<\/p>\n
Nana Konadu is contesting to unseat President Mills, based on what she and the husband, Jerry John Rawlings perceives to be the failure of the Atta Mills led government to deliver promises to Ghanaians.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
