Ethiopia was third with four gold medals, six silvers and one bronze.

Uganda was fourth with four gold, three silver and seven bronze medals while Zanzibar were fifth with three gold, seven silver and five bronze medals. Djibouti got one gold medal and a bronze to finish seventh. Rwanda was at the bottom with one bronze.

“We have been striving to get medals for years, but I have faith in our athletes to qualify and perform well.”says Suleiman Nyambui, AT’s secretary general.

However, despite hoping for medals, sports officials have been lamenting about “poor preparations” when it comes to major events like the All Africa and Olympic games. This is due to the fact that neither national sports bodies of swimming ( TSA), athletics ( AT), boxing (BFT) nor table tennis (TTTA) has so far started training the athletes for the Games.

The problem, as was the case in the past, lies on financial aspects. But technically, Tanzania has to send a strongest contingent in all domains after the government has hired foreign coaches to take charge of the national teams.

Adres Edwardo Baro and Jorge Luis Bravo Rojas, have been in charge of athletic and have begun to impart advanced tactics to local runners for about three years.

Baro discloses that his goal is to fashion the runners so that they meet internationally accepted standards in middle distance races.

Financial constraints have seen Tanzania display shoddy performances in the recent international events.

Tanzania’s laudable performance was in 1982 when five medals were cart home from the Commonwealth Games held in Sydney, Australia.

Gidamis Shahanga and Juma Ikangaa are among the breathing luminaries who brought home silver medals from the Australian Games.

Others were Zakaria Barie (silver), Juma Mnyapanda (bronze), Robert Simon (bronze) and boxer Haji Ally (silver).

In anticipation of performing better, Athletics Tanzania’s (AT) secretary general Suleiman Nyambui said plans were in place to ensure Tanzania breaks the jinx next year.

“We regularly competed and won medals in the commonwealth games and other major events, this time, may be we can see the miracle in the olympic games.

Historically, Tanzania has managed to win two medals at the Olympic Games won by Filbert Bayi (gold) and Suleiman Nymabui (silver) in 1980 in Christchurch, Newzealand.

But in the commonwealth, the country has managed to win several gold, silver and bronze medals.

Nyambui recalls: “After recent years’ dismal performance, we’re determined more than ever to restore our 1970s and 80s status.” In 1974, Filbert Bayi, won a gold medal at the Games held in Christ-Church, New Zealand while Kamanya won the bronze medal. Bayi broke the 1500m record, which was earlier set by the legendary American, Jim Ryun.

Bayi, who currently holds the secretary general post at the Tanzania Olympic Committee, grabbed another medal at the 1978 event held in Edmonton, Canada.

Besides, Bayi has the longstanding 1500m and 3000m records in steeplechase that none has managed to break for almost three decades.

Unlike Bayi’s invincible records, Nyambui’s 10,000m and 5000m records came to an end in the 2000s when John Yuda broke them.

In 2002, Yuda broke three national records in 5000m using 00:13:03 minutes, 10,000m clocking 00:27:06 minutes and half Marathon finishing at 1:00:02 hours.

Yuda also won a bronze medal when he finished third in the 10,000m race at the Commonwealth Games held in Manchester in the same year.

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica – All the Time

View post:
Tanzania: Athletes Yet to Attain Marks

The Citizen (Dar es Salaam) Suleiman Jongo 13 June 2011 Dar es Salaam — With 410 days to go before the start of the 2012 Olympic Games, Tanzania has not yet identified its possible athletes for the games, held after every four years.
