National Under-23 team head coach Jamhuri Kihwelu has announced quitting the job after the return leg of the 2012 London Games qualifier against Nigeria next Sunday.

The decision comes just two days after deputy minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports Fenella Mukangara told the parliament about government’s intention of hiring a foreign replacement.

Kihwelu, who was coaching the Under-23 team without a contract, criticised the government’s move angrily for failing to “respect and trust” local coaches.”I have decided to step down because the government does not respect my contribution for this team.

“They have reached this stage not because they were being coached by a foreign coach. It’s upsetting to see the government turn a blind eye on what I’ve achieved with the team.

“I wonder why the ministry has lost belief and trust in the local coaches. I’m disappointed and I’ll resign soon after playing Nigeria next week,” said the former Simba and Taifa Stars defender. He stressed: “I have already made up my mind regardless of how we’ll perform against the Nigerians.”

Kihwelu has proved to be a great coach having guided the youth team to knock out highly fancied Cameroon. And now the team is on course to send the Flying Eagles packing after recording a 1-0 home victory last week.

TFF secretary general Angetile Osiah expressed sympathy for the coach, but disclosed that the federation was nowhere near to replace him.

Meanwhile, Flying Eagles coach Austin Eguaveon said that he is losing no sleep over their loss to Tanzania in the first leg of the Olympic qualifiers.Eguaveon’s team succumbed with only eight minutes to time. But he argued that their hosts were only lucky adding that the return leg in Benin City will be the last bus stop of Tanzania who sent Cameroon packing.

“We lost despite being the better team and it will be a different story when we host the return match.

“There is no way they will survive us when they come for the second leg. We will definitely pay them back in their own coin.”I promise Nigerians that my boys will score five goals,” boasted the former Eagles defender.

Kihwelu remains hopeful of claiming another high profile victim in the competition. The outspoken coach said they would be going to Nigeria to spring another surprise.”We are going to Nigeria with the aim of playing to win. My players are in buoyant mood and raring to finish what we started last Sunday,” Kihwelu said.

The national U-23 team received a major boost on Thursday after four reliable players joined teammates at the camp. They are: goalie Shaaban Kado, midfielders Mrisho Ngassa, Jabir Aziz and striker Mbwana Samatta.

The four were on international duty with the national senior team, Taifa Stars, in Bangui.
