A National Plan of Action (NPA) has been launched in Accra towards the elimination of the worst forms of child labour in Ghana by 2016, with commitment from social partners to collectively combat the menace.

The objective is to restore dignity to the child.
Convention 138 of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) which bothers on the minimum age for admission to employment was also launched to commemorate the World Day Against Child Labour in Ghana .

The theme for the day was : Warning! Children in Hazardous Work: End Child Labour.’

The function brought together officials from social partners such as the ILO, the UNICEF, the US Embassy, Ghana Employers Association, Organised Labour and Ghana’s Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs.

A former Country Representative of the ILO, Mrs Sylvia Hinson-Ekong, in her remarks bemoaned the manner in which children were engaged in hazardous work at the expense of their lives and stressed the need for the development to be addressed.

She said governments the world over are united by the use of international standards against child labour for which reason the ILO convention was being brought to the fore for implementation ahead of the 2016 deadline when countries were expected to eliminate the canker.

Mrs Hinson-Ekong noted that with the launch of the NPA, there was the need for a renewed national action against child labour coupled with an intensive educational campaign to create awareness on the NPA to ensure an effective social mobilisation for attitudinal change.

The Deputy Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, Mr Antwi Boasiako-Sekyere, who chaired the function, said since child labour and poverty were inextricably linked the first step towards addressing the problem was for governments to deal with the poverty situation in their respective countries.

He called on the social partners involved in the campaign against child labour to put ‘their hands on deck’ towards the successful implementation of the NPA.

The Country Representative of the UNICEF, Dr Iyabode Olusanmi, lauded Ghana for being recently elected to the ILO Governing Board at its 100th session in Geneva.

He also acknowledged Ghana’s effort in child protection adding that the country had gained international recognition with respect to its commitment to abolish child labour in the sub-region.

‘The National Plan of Action developed and being launched today further emphasises your commitment to fight the worst forms of child labour in Ghana.’

The Chairman of the Council of State, Professor Kofi Awoonor, who launched the NPA, in his keynote address, commended the social partners in their collective effort to eliminate the worst forms of child labour and its related problems.

He called on the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to commit themselves to the campaign and asked the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs to become guardians to the implementation of the NPA.
